WTNQ Q-Country 104.9

A few questions about this station...

1) I've noticed their stereo pilot is been turned off for at least a month, maybe two. Anyone know why?

2) I noticed they air the Vols games. How does a non-Citadel station in the Knoxville market get away with airing the play-by-play, especially on a format that competes with WIVK?

3) Since they have been around for awhile as "Q Country" and as "Q105 The Boss" before that, how did they let Q93 get away with using a "Q" in the same market?

Answers to 'TNQ questions...

1) In an effort to be a "Knoxville" station, 'TNQ has really screwed up their signal over Northern Campbell County (they're licensed to LaFollette). It's believed they're trying to figure a way to run both their stations (104.9 and 106.1) out of studios at Ceder Bluff. Both of the 1Kw AM's in LaFollette are kicking their tail locally in the county, and one of the AM's is really a professional sounding, locally oriented station and the FM simply isn't competing.

2) The previous owner of "Q105 The Boss" (a former LaFollette mayor) is good friends with Bobby Denton and the deal for the Vols was struck between them back in the Dick Broadcasting days, sometime before Citadel entered the picture. Matter of fact, it's one of the only agreements that Citadel still honors and no one knows why because the new 'TNQ ownership/management drops and interrupts the Vols anytime there is a buck to be made elsewhere. Very questionable.

3) And 'TNQ is 92% owned by a Floridian. The ownership and so call local management haven't a clue as to what local East Tennessee radio is about or how to compete. They also own Oliver Springs' 106.1 "The River" (they can't come up with anything original apparently) and use the 104.9 signal as a "freebie" bonus to sell advertising on the 106.1 signal. And anyway, the 104.9 signal (or lack of) is not a big player in Knoxville, so the Q105 - Q93 thing isn't a real concern to Journal.

sounds like u guys have it figured out....good job...stay on it and keep us informed...we need more guys like u....thanks...tha sled

It's a couple and the wife is supposed to be easy on the eyes. Pretty rare since most radio people generally have a more radio-friendly appearance.

Campbell County is outside the Knoxville market even though the signal does get here. Also any station can run UT Sports but can only sell in their county of license. So with WTNQ airing it in Campbell County they can not get advertising dollars from Knox county. Just like WLIL in Lenoir City has been running UT Sports longer than anyone, can only get ad dollars in Loudon County. As long as UT gets their fee for the broadcasts and the station can make money selling it they will. As far as using the "Q" in their imaging, nothing is original in radio anymore and as long as the legal call letters aren't close they can get by with it.

Thanks for all the answers guys. 104.9 really seems like a waste of radio station to me. Meanwhile they have "Sexy 960", which is a pretty good live/local oldies format stuck on AM. They need to switch spots and stick the satellite country format on AM, and put "Sexy" on FM where more of us can hear it.

RMarino... The two stations (104.9 FM and 960 AM) are no longer a combo. The WQLA 960 owner sold the FM about 3 years ago to the Florida folks. That "little" AM (960) as some like to refer to it, has created quite a "buzz" in Campbell County and proven that if done right and with the listeners interest at heart, AM can still compete and compete big. They push being local, local, local, but with a respectable "Knoxville like" sound. They really are decent! They're still a little week in mornings, but it's only out of loyalty to their morning guy who was with them before the "big change" from gospel and no one else in the county is any better. I've been "keeping an ear" on them for about two years now and they've not made any "missteps" so far and they've been gouged, poked and prodded by a lot of misrepresentation, untrue information and accusations (you can guess by who) all along the way and from what I can tell they've taken the high road and stayed on the straight and narrow, keeping their listeners (and advertisers) in mind all along. They stream their audio (and it sounds good too. I'd like to know who's the brains behind that), do a lot of "family friendly" social networking on Facebook and consistently promote their website on air, which they keep updated on a regular basis with lots of information that's really useful to the locals up there . I think they'll push it over the top soon.

Dont post comments to these normally, dont have the time. My first post now. I see RMarino, Knoxbob, TN Cowboy and leadsled posted many times. On the other hand "RADIOINTHEKNOWest" has 2 posts He joined the board 20 mins. after 3 question posed about TNQ. In my opinion you four and the readers have been duped, misinformed and misled by one worker at WQLAam SEXY960 RAW pretending to be just another listener. My opinion, everything stated below's coming from jealousy, anger, and they are losing their shirts over at SEXY.My opinion, same 10 commercials repeating for months. Didnt they all grow up there? Why cant you sell anything? WQLA seems like a hobby, not a business, and its for sale.

Heard no plans of a TNQ move to K-ville. Why? Be the big fish in Campbell, not a small one in K-town, and in a clean, restored, historic building and nobodys kicking Qs tail, not SEXY for sure. WLAF does a "good job". Whats a SEXY radio station anyway, nobody can figure it out and those naked signs on the building. Disgusting? Look like they should hang on a strip club or casino. Professional sounding AM ? A little live and a lot of recorded. Pat yourself on the back....intheknowest.
VOLs have been on Q way before Jennings owned in 99. Theres plenty of stations who carry VOLs in E. TN. Get you "matter of facts" straight. Knoxbob knows. Never hear dropped/interrupted games for $$. QUESTIONABLE? RADIOINTHEKNOWest's motivation for trashing.

Floridians you say! Foreigners!! String em up! Thats a hell of a commute, because they are there every day. Why did Jennings have to sell to them anyway? Better to sell it than to lose it all together. Yeh, and playing country, southern rock, bluegrass and actually "getting out" and serving the community sure misses the mark around here. Sounds like TNQ compete just fine. And that RIVER thing, its nothing like being a SEXY RAW. Again, what is a SEXY RADIO STATION ? Cross selling or freebies as he calls them. It works both ways. Its an old thing if you havent heard when you have more than 1 station in an area. Maybe WQLAam and SEXY960 can cross sell with each other. Wouldnt surprise me if they tried it. In my opinion, the only thing RADIOINTHEKNOWest makes sense on is that Q93 is more than likely, not concerned.

I wont even get into the propaganda of the 2nd post of RADIOINTHEKNOWest but it again reads like a regular listener. We must all be stupid. my opinion this saying is appropriate. "those who live in boarded up brick buildings with no tenants think they can throw stones"

So the Florida owner isn't pretty? Sucks to be duped, misinformed, and misled. Then again, she could look like the accountant guy on 100.3 and I'd never know.

I don't think anyone suggested Q93 should be concerned about anything (at least in this matter.) I was suggesting that WTNQ should have been concerned about Q93 stealing their "Q" in the market since 104.9 was using it first.

Q-93 is more concerned with competing with WIVK. 104.9 Q-Country was not a factor outside of Campbell County until about two years ago when they started running at full power when the new Knoxville owners took it over and improved the signal.

Again, no one is saying Q93 is concerned about what WTNQ does. I guess I'm not making myself clear. Hello... is this thing on? <tap> <tap> <tap>

Looks like RADIOINTHEKNOWest has clammed up and has no more to say on the matter. They moved him to mornings on WQLA and Kay McGoo is on in the afternoons now. Looks like WQLA took down one of the old useless eyesore receiver dishes off the roof of the old building about the same time Kay McGoo started there. Maybe she took it down for them. I hear she is real good at taking down these reciever dishes at radio stations when she gets angry. Heard the station sold too. Anybody here that?

My Lord, man! What radio person would dare describe receiver (sic) dishes as eyesores? Satellite communications is the most significant thing to happen to broadcasting since Marconi built those ship-to-shore towers at Annapolis (you geniuses all realize radio was invented to provide communications to ships, don't you?) Anyway, before sat dishes, network radio sounded like a couple of tin cans on a piece of string. Now, networks sound like local stations, sportscasts of games are totally listenable, and having a dish on the roof is a very small price to pay. Sorry for the rant, but dumb comments like that make my blood boil. Small minded people have already all but ruined broadcasting, and are now polluting the Internet with their stupidity. Love, BB

You are right BB. I agree. Lets keep that blood pressure down. The eyesore is not the dishes. Its the half naked pictures of a guy and a girl on two huge signs hanging on the building advertising the radio station. NOW THATS AN EYESORE ! just ask any of us that live here and have to look at them every day.

Half naked images of a man and a woman? Now I am really angry. I demand the picture of the man be REMOVED!!! What an eyesore!
...and thanks for the explanation.

Definitely a third string conversation, Concerning a small market station. As for Q-93, I'm sure the "frog station" is really worried and will soon abandon their proven formula to become another automated jukebox.

And what's wrong with WHOLE naked? Amiright?

TnJanitor, I hope you will be getting your radio out of the shop soon, because the Frog format has already begun to morph into exactly that...another automated jukebox. The image of a full service station seems to be evaporating, day by day over at 107.7, probably due to the influence of Citadel suits in this post-Brantley time.

If Citadel has really issued orders to stop worrying about trivialities like traffic, weather, news, etc., does it mean the other country stations now have a shot at a piece of that pie? No, the Q and Merle are not going to beat WIVK, but it has dropped gradually from the lower 30 shares to the mid-teens, and no one, particularly the advertisers, seem to have noticed. But, if they each picked up 2 shares against the "new" frog, and B-97 picks up a point or two from wherever, Citadel could have a mess on its hands. I mean "another" real mess.

...and months later WTNQ is still in mono. Surely they don't intend on staying mono with a country format. How can this possibly be a good idea?
