WTOP 103.5 live from bottom of well

I was visiting Bethesda yesterday -- I live in the Philly 'burbs. Regarding the audio processing on all-news WTOP 103.5 ... I listened for a bit around 1pm and then again about 7:30pm. They sound as if they are broadcasting from the bottom of a well! Was this a glitch or do they always sound that way? Awful! It's news for gosh sakes ...

Hoo boy :-[

I've since discovered that the car radio had been unintentionally been set to FIELD HALL. All the stations were sounding like that -- but I only tried one

Very embarrassing. That'll teach me to stay off out-of-market boards.

Uh.... what's Field Hall? ???

And slightly off topic... why did WTOP simulcast on 1050 for 4 months if they had no apparent intention of making said simulcating permanent? If they were shopping around for somebody to buy or lease 1050 whey did they not stick with the pre-February '10 format (whatever it was, I forget) on 1050 until they found a leaser?

I don't have my owner's manual handy, but I think Field is a type of setting -- like Bass, Treble, Balance, Fader, etc. -- and Hall is short for Concert Hall.

1050AM was being leased out 24/7 to the Air America Radio Network. They ceased operations at the end of January.

That seems to answer my question. Apparently Bonneville(?), needing something to put on 1050 (the EAS signal 24/7 couldn't have served that purpose? :D), simply simulcast 'TOP as filler until a new leaser could be found.
