WTOP Continues With CBS Radio News

If anything, I think it's an edge for WNEW. While WTOP is in national news that may have no relevance to DC area listeners, WNEW is doing traffic on the 1's.

...and how is that working out so far?

Since I don't have the PPM data on WNEW for :00-:05 compared to other times, I have no idea.

Are you making the argument that a national newscast would draw more listeners to WNEW?

It's probably fair to say that WNEW-FM's shares are a little bit on either side of 1.0 (although we haven't been able to see them for several months).
The station soft-launched on Sunday 1/22/2012 at 12 noon...so the one-year anniversary is upcoming.
While all-news needs a chance to grow, it has been a year and the sledding looks tough.
Having a (somewhat weaker) signal that's not in DC-proper and going up against a behemoth may be just too much for 99.1 to overcome.

Too bad there is not another signal for CBS to buy. WTOP did very well buying one primary stick and several secondary stations. I know it is only two now, but they have been on and off a couple of small AM stations too. One way or the other, it is gone well for WTOP. CBS should be looking for secondary sticks.

Somehow, i seems to me that CBS Radio does not intend to keep 99.1 as all-news for very long. If WTOP's contract has been renewed with CBS News, then WNEW-FM might not be all-news for much longer.

CBS makes more money with CBS Radio Network being on WTOP because of WTOPs ratings. WNEW has ABC and is doing okay with that.

WNEW is a very good sounding station. It is somewhat of a mystery why they aren't doing better. In New York, WCBS and WINS both do well. WTOP is very similar to WCBS and WNEW similar to WINS in approach.

WNEW has very good reach where WTOP's signals don't..North and East of Baltimore. With their very good reach into Baltimore, it would make sense to target Baltimore, as well as DC.

New York and Washington are the only cities with two full time all news stations.

WNEW does not cover Baltimore in their programming. The target only DC. In doing that, they are targeting those commuters that travel in the directions where WNEW does not have a signal.

I agree it is a great station... I listen to them from Atlanta, but their signal means they should be a DC/Baltimore station with lots of Baltimore news coverage. The need to change up the programming a bit or get another signal to compliment 99.1.
