WTPI Oldies Flip?

D

What happened to the alleged flip of WTPI today? Is this something that will actually happen and if so when? This week? They seem to be playing a lot of promos for the lite rock format?

Hmm?

Could be classic country or country oldies.

Something will happen at WTPI in the next month. Entercom

Classic Country, eh? They might try that if they want the billing on 'TPI to drop below WXNT.

When last in Indy I thought there was another station, that is AC and plays some oldies as well? I think the station was called B 105.7. From what I saw in this last book seems they beat WTPI pretty badly. Maybe the owners of WTPI should ask themselves some questions, which station has been around longer? Of the two who's had consistantly higher numbers? Who's more visable in the market? As the jocks go, who's more relatable to their audience? Who's really pulling in the most dollars? Bottom line. If they were to flip to Oldies can they make the money they want and need to make, what do they have to lose? Many markets have more than one ore two AC's and stay in the format. I have family in Carmel and they mentioned they used to listen to WTPI but switched to WYXB, what's the difference between the two since they are both AC? In conclusion, I would hope if they do change to another format, they'd give the jocks a chance instead of just wiping them out.

WYXB aka B105.7 has all but totally wiped WTPI off the Map since it came and WTPI's other Bread and Money was Smooth Jazz and with the closer move in of WYJZ once liscened to Leabnon now in Liscened to Speedway does a pretty good job taking its Jazz audience. its time for TPI to be Buried and allowd to go out to pasture the only 4 i would love to see get a chance at the new TPI would be Jerry Curtis, Gary Hummel, Kelly Vaughn and Steve Cooper who have been there for a good 15+ years Each.

Their overnite guy has been there for like 20 years mike obrien

WTPI - Mike O'Brien

Mike has been doing overnights his whole career. He was a great overnight jock at WIFE in the 70's. Like all the WIFE jocks during that time, he would tape requests from listeners over the phone, and there were a lot of very strange people calling in during the middle of the night. One regular was a guy who named himself "Beatneck Ricky" and Mike would let him tell stupid jokes on the air before having to "reel him in". One old aircheck I have has a clip from a woman who complained of having insomnia. Mike answered back without missing a beat..."That's great! It's good for my show."

In 1975, Mike moved over to WNDE and also did overnights. The format was much stricter with Jodie Lyons "All Hit Music" jingles between each record (a la "Hot Hits" of the 80's). The most he could do was some one-liners at the beginning of each song.

WTPI went on the air October 15, 1984. Mike was there doing overnights and still is to this day. Does anyone know if he and the other WTPI jocks are doing voicetracking now, or still hanging out all night?

Re: WTPI - Mike O'Brien

Does that make him the longest running indy radio jock? Is Reb Porter still on the air? Reb started in Indy radio in the early or mid 60s.
