WTPS on the chopping block?

Word is floating around that Radio One has decided to pull the plug on WTPS. It will be sold effective October 15, 2007 to a Christian broadcasting company.

It never fails, when you can't get enough listeners to make a profit go religion. The AM band would be much better off if all the stations in that position would go off instead.

Uh oh I'm going to burn for that remark!

Yup, you're going to hell, Mike! :D

I don't have any problem with religious formats (I got my start at WMCU, after all), but every religious format I know of on an AM station either hasn't lasted or is maintained as something to simply keep the license alive. I'd add the qualifier that it would be nice to see Salem move into town and add more variety to the news/talk market, but I'm not sure that would work in South Florida.

The purpose behind Christian broadcasting (I say "christian" because most "religious" formats are christian in nature) is to share the gospel, not to turn a buck (if they're doing it for the right reasons, that is).

btw, you won't "burn for that remark", but Hell is real, and it's nothing to joke about...

Actually I was thinking more in terms of getting flamed here on the board.

Doesn't Salem already own WKAT?

I'm surprised there hasn't been a religious station that plays secular music with a little bit of preaching in between songs. Does anyone remember "Powerline" that top 40 stations used to run on Sunday mornings? I thought that was a very good show. The preaching was very laid back and easy to listen to but very meaningful. I think something like that might bring some closer to God.

I'm afraid it's true. An insider there is doing his last show on Monday. It will flip to a Christian format soon after,
