WTQR Top Salesperson - Gone!

Heard today that the top-performing Salesperson at WTQR is no longer with them! BH has been the top biller for years...consistent winner of Clear Channel's "President's Club" award. Staff received a memo today saying she is no longer with them - period. This is a huge development with major impact. I'm sure the Wolf will be paying attention to this one! What could have happened to let an important player like that leave the building? Why did she leave? And, where will she go? I'm sure there must have been a non-compete. Sometimes I don't think management understands the strength of some salespeople's relationships with their clients. This one is a real surprise!

Probably making too much $$$...if most of her billing was agency, the traffic folks can write it up for a LOT less money (they probably already did so anyway). Then the salary/ commission can go to the bottom line instead of an employee- textbook CC.

Such a large percentage of TQR's business is agency based and ratings related, the personal relationship are not nearly as important as with a station like SJS. for example. Just look at ratings vs revenue - the power rating. Those stations that out bill their ratings have stronger relationship sellers!

Unless fired for cause, look for a top sales person to have to sit out a non-compete.

Well...guess what...in this case, this particular salesperson was also always a leader in bringing in new local direct business. Kind of blows that agency $ theory. I'm really stumped as to why they would let this person go. We may never know why, as I imagine they gave her some kind of severance in exchange for not talking. At least that's my guess. :-X

the rumor is that this wasn't "sales" related and that the person in question may have committed a behavioral faux pas...obviously a BBIIIIIGGGGGGGG one

Those things do happen!

While the person in question may have been a good relationship seller, I stand by the comment that the bult of TQR's business is agency/ratings related!

New piece of information...I understand that the top biller at CC Charlotte was also let go on the same day. Could this be some kind of CC mandate? Maybe they've decided they need to take those accounts and hire three new salespeople?

Would not be a surprise. Top billers make a lot of money and the company, across the board, could save tons by breaking up the account list to sellers with lower commission rates and lower guarantees.

Can you imagine what it's doing to morale! I'd hate to be one of the senior sales reps there! This sends a message loud and clear in my opinion. ???

M-O-N-E-Y

such a wonderful thing

talent or sales watch your back, the money people are about to panic.

Could you explain? What money people? Don't understand your comment.

I don't want to put words in stench's mouth, but I think what he means is this:

Lately, the folks at CC have been letting go top talent and sales reps all over the country. Best I can tell, it isn't related to results from the employees, but rather the amount of money they are costing the company. There are examples of top-rated talent being let go for no reason other than to save money.

I'm not sure if this incident is related to the ongoing cost-cutting measures, but it could be. CC is in the middle of a major restructuring, so there's no telling who will go next. Let's just hope that after the chips fall where they will, things will start to get better.

YES. Not limited to CC though. They are in spotlight because of their effort to go private equity. The market does not like business models that fail to show quarter to quarter and year to year growth. Radio is having a very hard time showing growth year to year. The financial reality is frightening investors (the money people) whether they are institutional or individual-Billions are on the line. There is still a huge expense on programming side, soft ratings overall and radio usage way down plus big issues with cost of sales, streaming expense and increased copyright royalties. The big revenue accounts will become house accounts and commissions eliminated. Senior AE's will be shocked and some will leave the building. There is an internal struggle between the online people and the traditional radio spot selling people. Q2 is a disaster for most everyone. CC is simply trying to make the numbers work to bring home the "deal" and they will most likely fall short.

Philadelphia is very telling with release of first currency on PPM. Most all 18-34 stations are at bottom of heap. Not a good sign for the future of radio when 18-34 is showing little or no radio usage-this is a key stat and all of us should pay close attention to what the reality is. Some of us already know the reality, others are sticking around for the death dance. Kudos to KZPS, Dallas, radio needs more of this thinking and soon.

Remember, I am just a stupid guitar player and the people portrayed herein are completely fictional. The digital audio player will self destruct in five seconds.
