Anybody see the WTQR TV campaign that started today? Thoughts?

Wolf's New Calls Should Be W.A.D.D.

I highly doubt TQR is intimidated by the Wolf.

Yes.com lists the following yesterday:

3:41pm EST Rascal Flatts | Life Is A Highway
3:45pm EST Toby Keith | Courtesy Of The Red, White And Blue (The Angry American)3:49pm EST Rascal Flatts | My Wish

... and today:

2:38pm EST Rascal Flatts | Life Is A Highway
2:43pm EST Craig Morgan | That's What I Love About Sunday
2:46pm EST Rascal Flatts | My Wish

Not just two songs from the same artist within a 15-minute span... but the SAME TWO SONGS. I ain't bulls****ng ya, check it yourself.

And I thought Clear Channel didn't get it.

I think CC is taking the Wolf seriously and they should (despite the Selector screwups). It's pretty smart to run TV ads at this point, just reinforcing somethings...no major changes.

CC should take The Wolf seriously! Although WTQR doesn't have the numbers it once did when I worked there in the early 80s, it is just a shadow of its former self! There have been numerous attempts at breaking TQR's hold on the country audience. WHSL (Whistle 100) had the best chance in the late 90s when I was there, but the owners were not willing to spend the promotions money to "really" go after the 5th and Summit bunch. Since then, WQMG, 102 JAMZ and others have gradually chipped away at TQR's audience share. Now IS THE TIME to break TQR and my guess is it WILL HAPPEN even though The WOLF is having music problems.

I will repeat portions of a comment made earlier in the Oldies thread. Any competition should be taken seriously by the targeted station. And every station needs to at least once a year, review itself as if it had a strong competitor (whether one exists or not). That is what made TQR so great when Les Acre was the PD. He knew the importance of self examination!

The good PD will review every aspect of his station - through the eyes of a competitor. Identify weaknesses (acknowledge that they exist) and fix them. Make the strenghts stronger!

It is amazing the little things you can find and ask yourself "why the hell did I do that?"

XTalker is soooooooo right! When stations or even personnel rely on their previous accomplishments only...they will get burned eventually!
Self-examination and action on what you find is the true basis for continued success!

How in the world does a music screwup like that happen not once, but twice???? If you are the new guy on the block and want people to try your stuff, you gotta make DAMN SURE what you put on the air is as close to perfect as can be. Hearing Rascall Flatts like that would make me change the dial and probably never give 'em another shot.

Selector is famous for this. We used to do music tests every 90 days and we couldn't for the longest time figure out why certain songs "burned" so quickly- that is, until we went back and actually reviewed the music logs! This anomaly has burned many a PD without them even realizing it was happening.

I've been quietly watching the country listeners I know to see if they're sampling the Wolf, and for a few days they did so, but the last week, my wife's car radio has gone back to WTQR and stayed there...

Just saw the WTQR TV! What the hell???? Are the kids supposed to be symbolic or what? Does that mean hey kids tune in, you'll love us. Maybe they want to start recruiting them young, then grow them into 25-54 listeners. ;D Well, guess it's better than some of the other radio ads I've seen. ::)

I think the ad is saying that 'TQR brings out the kid in all of us. Looked pretty well done to me and placed on a local ESPN football break, so pretty good placement. The kids look cute and their take on lip-synching the songs is appealing.

Plus, it keeps up the Aunt Eloise "mystique"....

Aunt Eloise hasn't sounded like a woman in several years. They either need to do the sex change operation or drop it, already!

You would be surprized to find out how many TQR listeners still think Aunt E is a woman!

I think the ad is pretty cheesy. The only reason for the kids & dog is that research shows people react positively to kids & dogs! no brain surgery here.

That's EXACTLY what 'TQR is wanting to do. Reinforce the fact they THEY are the heritage, feel good, family loving country station. Smart move in the ultra conservative Triad.

Here's the latest on WTQR's PD situation from R&R

Cooler Takes Rooster Reins
Oct. 27, 2006
By Ken Tucker

Clear Channel country WTQR/Greensboro PD/afternoon jock Trey Cooler segues to recently launched country sister WRDU (the Rooster)/Raleigh as PD. Meanwhile, CC country WKKT/Charlotte PD John Roberts adds those same duties for WTQR.

Roberts' move marks the second time in less than a week that Clear Channel has consolidated country programming positions. As previously reported, country WGAR and oldies WMJI/Cleveland PD Meg Stevens was named PD for both WPOC/Baltimore and WMZQ/Washington, D.C.

If you are a PD in radio these days, you might consider taking some classes at the local community college and build a new career. Big Radio will do away with local PDs over the coming years. Why not, nothing much local on most stations anyway.

In fact, I could see a cluster like CC in Greensboro being totally run from Raleigh or Charlotte. With the limited visibility they take advantage of these days, there is no reason to have that fancy studio! Just phone it in from Raleigh or the Queen City!

If local sales is a thing of the past, it is only a matter of time that local people of any type are a thing of the past. A small office for the public file and one "studio" with a board op. Everything else comes from somewhere else!

It is a sad state we find radio in today!

I think you're totally correct X-Talker. In fact a few years ago a higher up at the CC cluster told me that's where it's heading. All the sales will be conducted on a transactional basis by a few people who just sit at their computers. Every year, CC, and others I'm sure, find new ways to consolidate and cut jobs. It's just a matter of time. BUT, I'm not going to loose all faith because I still believe that everything is cyclical. Just like people will eventually give up shopping the big box stores because of lack of service, etc., I think the lack of local content will open the door for other smaller stations who are willing to provide what the public wants. Regionalism with smaller stations may be a wave of the future. Smaller stations are able to be profitable because they offer small business owners a way to advertise, while providing alternative programming that is of interest to the public. There are still quite a few smaller business owners who won't pay CC or Entercom rates. Smaller, regionalized stations offer them an alternative and economical way to advertise.

CCX, you're right on...those operators that focus on local dollars will do just fine in the long run. Let the big hitters fight over the agency dollars, history shows us that what is hot today is not tomorrow.
