I remember WTQX (around 1974) as being horribly overmodulated, like the jocks were constantly pinning the vU meter. Sounded like a CB radio.
I do have one story for you about WTQX.
I had a connection to the black community of Selma in a couple of ways. I did a Sunday interview show for WAMA, and my guests were often from the black community - F.W. Reese, the various Sanders and Chestnuts, the head of Selma Academy, and the president of the Black Elks club (can't remember his name - a very tall man, I remember). Later I was a writer/photographer for Selma's weekly black newspaper (I think it was called The Black Belt Journal; it was run by a Rev. Dixon).
I don't remember the circumstances, but I was in the WTQX on-air studio, showing a unique earphone to one of the DJs (I think his last name was maybe Bailey?). He was very excited about it, because it could be worn without messing up an Afro, which was THE hairstyle back then. It was from Radio Shack, a single hard plastic cup that fit right on your ear, and you wore it on only one ear. I later heard that most of the jocks there bought one to use on the air.
The odd thing is that I have no memory whatsoever as to what their equipment looked like. Darn!
