WTRY Goes all X-MAS already

I turned on today, and WTRY 98.3 has already gone all Christmas. Isn't a little early...actually way too early. Will anyone listen to the station with Christmas being almost 2 months away. I can see going after Thanksgiving..but right after Halloween?

THEY'RE NOT ALONE.

WBZZ -- Buzz 105 is ALSO doing all-Xmas!!

And YES, it's waaaaayyyyy too soon.

Everyone knows why TRY has gone Christmas (because they always do), but is the fact that WBZZ has gone all Christmas signal an upcoming format change? Just curious if anyone has an opinion and if you think they are, what will they flip to?

when is the fcc going to start fining stations for doing this ?

i could see mabye the weekends with x-mas music but 24-7 come on this has to stop

Anyone think WYJB or WROW is next, or is Pamal done with all-Christmas stations? As for WBZZ, I think they should go CHR and give FLY the competition it needs... since Kiss-FM is really competing against Jamz and not FLY, imo... or maybe try to go against WGY-FM with a more liberal or moderate talk format?

And on a side note, it looks like Buzz's website hasn't even been touched at all xD

I had the same thought that you had cowboy, The stations that go christmas early are using it as a buffer for a format change. Bug country did that last year when they switched satellite providers.

WTRY goes all Christmas early every year. But WBZZ could be a format change in the making. They switched their station slogan to "Santa 105.7". They have a huge billboard buy pushing their Christmas format which you can see driving into Albany on 787 South. AND, I was listening this morning and heard no mention at all of their usual format or call letters. My guess is they are pushing their Christmas format to attract new listeners to their frequency luring them in for a new format after the holidays.

Ah yes... it's been done before. 104.9 did it to kick out smooth jazz and 1570 Amsterdam did it 3 years ago? before switching from talk to standards.

Looks like WROW might be the Pamal station to flip to Christmas this year... check the albanymagic.com site, it already mentions that they're "the Christmas station" once again =)

I was expecting either Magic 590 or B95 to be the one to flip this year (Bridge and FLY wouldn't have been good matches for an all-Xmas format)... wonder how they'll do with an AM station playing all-Christmas? =P

...and I was right, as of this morning, Magic 590 is playing all Christmas music. =D

Edit: Nope, doesn't seem to be all-Christmas yet... but I like the fact that they haven't gone all-Christmas yet, actually... WTRY and WBZZ went Christmas too early -_-

Both WTRY and WBZZ went all Christmas too early. But in WTRY's case it was an improvement. WTRY has such a redundant playlist even for an oldies station, that every time you tune into their regular format you hear a song you've heard so adnauseum, that you got to turn them off. There are a wealth of songs they could play but won't play being under the thumb of Big Daddy Clear Channel and their darn consultants.
As far as WBZZ, I believe they wanted to dump their failed format as soon as possible and get people listening so when the holidays are over they can grab them for their new sound.
Of the two stations, WBZZ has the better signal and the better mix, I believe.

Regarding WROW, would hard core P-1 (Women 35-64) Christmas listeners (not us AM radio geekazoids) really choose an All Christmas AM over an All Christmas FM? Especially as this relates to in-store and in-office listening which suffer from electrical, computer and mechanical noise generation, the FM signal has the advantage.

Going Christmas so early just burns people out on Christmas and creates a bunch of Scrooges.
I agree 100%. Even if I would listen to a station normally, WRNQ Lite 92.1 is the only Mid Hudson Valley station doing all Christmas, I would switch stations until right before Christmas. However some people, perhaps sponsors hoping to put listeners in the shopping mood, must think it is a good idea, with so many stations across the country going all Christmas.
