WTSP has finally moved

WTSP apparently has begun using its transmitter site in Riverview, as I can barely receive it up here in New Port Richey on my portable TV with a small antenna. It's now just like the other TV stations. The move may have occurred today, or at least in the last few days. The Wikipedia article on WTSP incorrectly states that the move occurred in July.

According to WTSP's press release, this move is being done in several steps and right now (according to the press release) they're still in the Holiday area, but at reduced power, they also will be off the air for a time. (the press release dated this evening, indicates they were off the air last night, but gives this as a future event, so it's hard to figure out.

At any rate, they don't give a firm date where there permanent antenna will be installed, up and working in Riverview.

(still not able to receive channel 10 over the air here after re-scanning)

I've reread the press release and to me, it's unclear as to where the antenna is located today, but wherever it is, the press release does allude to their being at half power, whether it's half power in Holiday or Riverview, I don't know, but from my location on the fringe on downtown St.Pete, channel 10 is still a no show; on the other hand, I can recieve the two ABC afilliates, WWSB as well as WFTS and all the other area full power stations.

They've got to be transmitting from Riverview because I'm in New Port Richey, just a few miles from Holiday, and I can only get the station if I hold the antenna in just the right position. Even if they were at half power in Holiday, I would of course get a very strong signal.

There goes viewers up in Hernando and especially Citrus County. Only TV Station I could pick up Southern Citrus.

A few years ago I was up in Inglis (Levy County) and I could pick pick up WTSP on a portable TV with the dipole antenna. That was the only station I could pick up other the WOGX Fox 51.

WTSP began transmitting from Riverview Saturday morning. They are at half power in Riverview now, but expect to be at full power this week.

Why?

I feel like one of the discontents who post here with a question like that...

But, this is a new era.

So, I ask, why would they spend the money to move when they estabilished themselves - allbeit by accident - as a powerful force in Pinellas, Hernando, Pasco, Citrus, Counties? It sounds as though they are giving all that up, now that co-channel is no longer an issue, but then neither is OTA.

OTA TV is coming back. Cable penetration nationwide is the lowest its been in 30 years and dropping. Cable is pricing themselves out of business. By moving to Riverview WTSP is now in the same location as all of the other TV stations, thus making channel 10 easier to receive.

One of the older WTSP press releases mentions that they will have a repeater/translator in south Central Citrus county, so for the growing masses going back to OTA television, this repeater would cover much of Citrus and north central Hernando.

The Riverview site is getting more bang for the buck as far as OTA goes; since #1, people will not have to reorient their antennas now that WTSP will be in Riverview, since basically everyone else has the antenna in Riverview (TV) and Riverview is closer to the population hub of the metro area.

I haven't checked the FCC website recently to see if WTSP still has a CP for the Citrus county repeater or not.

OTA is not coming back. The FCC has done an effective way of nailing the coffin. It was not neccessary to remove the analogue signal. The right way would have been to allow it to "wither on the vine".

This push to digital has resulted in technologies being tossed in favor of what is the equivalent to "impulse buying". The next great seminar: "Hurry, hurry, sign up, now! Good today only!" When you hear of people being swindled for thousands of dollars at those "shows" for stocks or real estate, broadcasting TV/radio will be billions.

In a short period of time, the bandwidth "problem" surrounding television will be non-existent.

As in most of your post, you are greatly mis-informed.

OTA TV is DEFINITELY coming back. Everyone I know is ditching their cable in favor of OTA, and why not? With the way the economy is, more and more people are seeing their cable tv subscription as a needless expense. I'm actually really impressed with the digital channels available here. How about that RTV baby? I can watch Bill Cosby and Peter Gun 'til the cows come home, and Channel 10 has awesome bed music on their weather channel.

(One "f", please)

Then explain why the Alliance in New York is not considering using the new 1WTC tower, nor are they considering Bayonne nor Governor's Island. They are content with staying with the lower Empire?

Tonight, try to find either of the big games on OTA in our Tampa Bay area stations. You will not find them. Rays are on TBS, Bucs on ESPN.

Technical notwithstanding, it is all about content.

The technical issues are secondary. I have an antenna on my roof for OTA. I have been leaving it toward Ft. Myers for the blacked out Buccaneer games the last 2 seasons.

I have a slingbox hooked to my cable box, I can watch any TV station available from music to free HD on demand from my taxi!

I used to watch Monday night football from the boat, remember ABC affiliate WWSB Channel 40? Now I do it from the iPad on ESPN.

"Mis-informed", please help me out, here. It's been awhile since I spoke with a Riverviewer.

The Bucs game is on ABC (WFTS) tonight. The TBS deal is with MLB as is Rays deal with SunSports/Fox. When it's important and has mass audience appeal, more often than not, the event is OTA somewhere. And by the way... The Rays WILL be on Fox13 the rest of the month beginning Saturday. ;-)

New York is a whole different animal. No way is that a good comparison or argument. It costs big money to move facilities. No reason to move if it's not broken. Once broadcast facilities were re-established on the Empire, why would they spend a ton of money to move them again?

PS... Most of the apps are restricting viewers to having a certain internet connection or a cable or DirecTV account to connect. Hopefully you have the correct service to use it. That's the NEW sticking point with that. As for SlingBox.... excellent choice. If you know what you're doing, and are technically smart like most of us here are, you'll find what you're looking for. However, that's not the case with most people.

Great News. I'm sure they payed dearly for that privilege. Where is MNF, next week.

because it doesn't cost that much more to move it in New York than it does from Holiday to Riverview. In Market #1, the ROI isn't there, what makes one think it is in Market #19 with WTSP? Remember it was multipath (today, we call it "won't find it") in Brooklyn that made them move to 1WTC in he first place.

Regarding signal strength, for the first time we here in South Tampa are able to get a signal on Channel 10 with a "rabbit ears" set-top antenna. The signal is intermittent and unreliable, but that is still a big improvement over the non-existent signal before, and the signal should improve once Channel 10 increases its power.

However, the signal to the western half of Pinellas County may be questionable, even after the power increase. We'll just have to wait and see.

Will the City of License change?

no...ESPN provides MNF to the local ABC affiliate each week (if the game is sold out)
