WTTS History.... Previous formats...Need Input from those who know

Hey Midwest, I didn't realize you were from Martinsville. Yeah, I have been a part-timer here at WCBK since 1983. Last 10 years doing the 5am to 9am shift. Love radio, but I'm still one of those folks that really likes the small town radio feel. Glad to have an owner here that still appreciates that too.

I remember hearing WTTV-FM in the Summer of 1966 while working in Eaton, Ohio. They were on the Cincinnati Reds Radio Network then and their signal came roaring through in west-central Ohio. I wondered then if they used the same tower as WTTV - Channel 4 which I seem to remember was given as over 1,000 feet high and located in Trafalgar (sp-?), Indiana.

Trafalgar has the distinction of being "Raglafart" when spelled backwards. Your spelling is correct.

Yes, I believe they've been on the Channel 4 tower (1250 feet high, IIRC) since Day One in 1960. I don't think their transmitter was ever actually in Bloomington.

Their coverage has always been excellent (I assume it still is). When I used to drive down to Bloomington from Chicago in the '70s and '80s, I would start hearing them just south of Rensselaer. The Hammond station on 92.3 (WYCA back then) dropped out about 10 miles north of there, so there was no overlap.

WTTS is such a Powerhouse, probably the most powerful FM in Indiana. They have 33 KW at over 1000 ft, that and their lower spot on the FM dial work together to make the station equivalent to a 100 kw stick. WTTS is more powerful than alot of Class Cs ive heard, and they have always kept their TX site well maintained.

Nice to talk to ya Scott, I hear ya on the radio all the time. I have always thought WCBK was a great Local Service station. Its great that we can still count on WCBK for severe weather, and school and business closings. Ive also always loved the very clean processing that WCBK uses, what kind of Procesing do you use. Also, the signal for WCBK has an excellent clean signal for only being 6kw at 300 ft. I can hear the station up in north Indianapolis around Castleton and Carmel with very little trouble, also the signal goes well past Bedford going south. I think wcbk is one of the last of the great comunity small town stations, they could easily run WCBK off the bird, but they keep it local with actual live Jocks, and local programs like Sell and Swop shop are great for the community. I would love to do some work for the station. If you need any odd jobs like a Board Opp or a Younger DJ let me know, either through here, or my email. I would love to work at such a great community friendly station. Im very dependable and work really hard to please the boss.....

Doesn't 'CBK run off the bird middays and overnights?

Last time I checked there was a live mid-day show. But I they do run ABC Country Coast to Coast overnights and weekends.

I don't think lower on the dial means much in terms of FM. as opposed to AM where the difference is significant.

A Class C designation allows for 100K ERP at 2000 feet HAAT. WTTS has a nice signal, and is one of the best in this area in terms of reach, but has nowhere near the signal of a full Class C.

WTTS was just placed early, prior to the major allocation tables. Grandfathered in if you will. This area of the country is limited to Class B stations or below as there are towns and cities fairly regularly that need some sort of radio service vs. areas of the country that, at the time of allocations, were extremely sparsely populated (West, Southeast, etc)

If you want to see signal some grandfathered, over the top, amazing signal go here:

I pick up WTTS regularly on US 30 in between Warsaw and Columbia City. This is where WFWI just coming in. WTTS has a statewide signal that outreaches WFBQ!

It also makes it all the way to Elizabethtown Kentucky, and out on I-64 midway between Louisville and Lexington... It even reaches into Effingham Illinois. Im lucky to live only 14 miles from their Tower. Their signal melts the antenna here.

Funny, I was trying to settle an argument with some fellow Southern Indiana Hoosiers about the history of WTTS and I stumbled onto this old thread. Wow I really miss Rock 92. Radio has devolved into a corporate mess since the good 'ol days. I still remember the old slogan: "No Rap and No Crap" from Rock 92. Too bad he current WTTS doesn't abide by the same standard of "No Crap". Seems like every time I try to listen, I hear Adele. I cannot change the channel fast enough!

Yet WTTS has remained in the current format for a quarter century.

I also worked there from 1980-83 doing "Time Out for Sports" with the legendary Joe Smith. Would love to know where those guys (and others) are doing? The Real JLW (Joel Widdows) Dave Nathan, Kurt Wise (news) Chris Michaels ??? Trish Demon? I had a wonderful time working there - and also worked as a DJ at Ye Ole Regulator (as someone previously mentioned many of us did.) Would love to be part of a reunion if one was ever put together.
