Lately WTTS has been running a promo saying "Thank you for supporting locally owned radio for 15 years." I thought they were always locally owned and operated. Please explain.

As far as I know, Starkes-Tarzian has owned the station for much, if not it's entire, existence, which would date back much longer than 15 years.

Maybe they're referring to WTTS being locally owned under their current AAA format, which started around 1992.
 
Isn't it funny that "locally" has many meanings. In this case we are in Bloomington but think local means Indy. ::)
 
WTTS (originally WTTV-FM) 92.3 has been locally-owned (meaning Bloomington, not Indianapolis) since Day One in 1960. The WTTS call letters (originally on 1490, then 1370, now 92.3) have been in Bloomington since 1947. Sarkes Tarzian has owned the stations for that entire time.

It's been 60 years, not 15. ;D

Probably because some clueless marketroid doesn't know any better. I'll guess that nobody in their audience was alive 60 (or even 30) years ago and, as such, doesn't care.

They didn't say, "we've been locally owned for 15 years." They said, "thank you for supporting local radio for 15 years."

There's a difference.

Perhaps people didn't support local radio 15 years ago.

Or didn't support THEM.

Just a thought....

The WTTS call letters moved from AM to FM in 1984 so longevity can't be the issue. Maybe they've been #1 in their format for 15 years, or at maybe WBWB had been the Bloomington ratings leader up until that time. I'm just guessing now since I haven't lived in the area since dinosaurs walked the earth and Chuck Marlowe called IU basketball games. ;D
 
I think the "15 years of local radio/world class rock" refers to their format switch to Triple A in 1992. I know the station's been around for years, but according to Wikipedia:

"In 1992, WTTS transformed into a progressive rock, or Triple A station, and remains so to this day. The station broadcasts from the state's largest radio transmitter tower, located in Trafalgar, IN"
