WTUE's Second Jason Roberts

It seems to me that WTUE had two people called Jason Roberts within 5 months of each other. The one who is on this board contributed to a promotional single put out in 1973 (finally found it on ebay) but they hired still another one I think. I heard this second one on Easter Sunday of '73 call himself Jason "bunny" Roberts. Al Morgan came along after that.

I'm pretty sure that was me on Easter Sunday 73. I can't remember the exact date I got canned from WTUE as Jason Roberts, but I worked there for around a year in 72-73. I was Jason "BABY" Roberts (and my only choice was the "BABY" - the jingle for Jason Roberts was already purchased and it was predetermined what my on air name would be. ) Bill Struck might have had another jock using the last name Roberts (he used to edit jingles together with different first and last names, so some partimer might have been Somebody Roberts after I left.)

I do remember the exact circumstances of being canned.. it was NOT a good day, but that story is for another day.

Radio Fish Heads from another thread said:
Will the "real Jason Roberts" please stand up...from the Rock of Dayton days
WTUE....
Looked at the time
Young ( was 19 I was told )
Glasses
Face may still have been broken out ( no offense )
Kinda of nervous - alittle when cracking the Mic ---maybe hyper
Great Screamer ---- funny
Does the "Paula Schroyer" ring a bell ?
Come on ----Jason ---talk to us !!!!!
The Fish

Okay, Okay I go on vacation and don't check this board for a week or so and then I see THIS!
Pretty good description of me at age 19 - hired at WTUE in late 1972 - will never forget the phone call from Bill Struck telling me I had the gig.
"And you'll be using the name Jason Roberts on the air" WHAT! "We already bought the jingle. No big deal, it'll be great!" So for the entire time I was there, I didn't answer to my "name" right away. Never got used to it, was not happy to be blown out in a budget move. (We were working on 5 day weeks with two all night jocks - me and "Bwana Johnny". Struck couldn't decide which one of us to let go, so they flipped a coin. I won, but Bwana found out and convinced Struck that he should stay and I should go. So the GM fired me, reading "things" out of my personnel file that weren't true. I shoulda sued.)

"Paula Schroyer" - WOW! That WAS a long time ago.
Thanks for remembering..

Maybe you shoud have sued. Bwana Johnny was the only person allowed to play all the singles in one shift anyway. I never will forget the week in '73 when Steamroller Blues by Elvis and Playground in My Mind by Clint Holmes debuted in the wrong category and got played less. I'ts too inconvenient to tape songs before going to school.

Was Bwana Johnny the same Bwana Johnny that was on Boss Radio WUBE in 1967 or was he another 'Bill had the jingle & this is your air name' deal?

Re: WTUE's Second Jason Roberts AND BWANA JOHNNY

The "real" Bwana Johnny was Richard "Rick" Johnson... WWDJ, WUBE plus a million more from Miami to San Francisco to Seattle and eventually Eugene, OR and Casper, WY.

He first used the name at WIRK in West Palm Beach, FL in 1960's where his autographed photo showed him wearing a pith helmet!. Passed away in 2005 in Seattle at 59.

Thank you...he was a superb talent who I enjoyed hearing on Boss Radio WUBE back in the day. I've mentioned this a time or two here, but if anyone has a clean copy of the Boss Radio WUBE jingle package, I would be very interested in obtaining a copy of it.

Correct. But, WTUE's "Bwana" was the late Don Everhart. Frankly, many DJ's called themselved "Bwana Johnny" back then...

Regarding Don Everhart a.k.a. Bwana Johnny

I was married to Don Everhart a.k.a. Bwana Johnny from WTUE. My name is Debbie. Don and I married 7/27/1974. He left WTUE in 1974 and went to WQPD in Lakeland, Florida. In 1975 we moved to Dallas, Texas and he went to work as Chief Audio Engineer for Bill Meeks at PAMS. Unfortunately Don passed away 10/19/1983 at the age of 32 from a massive heart attack.
