WTVK News Personalities

Never watched WTVK News back then. It always seem to be a notch below both WATE and WBIR's news back then. It wasn't until they moved from channel 26 to channel 8 that I really started watching their news cast. The blonde guy does look familar, but I can't place his name. The other guy, I don't have a clue.

I couldn't get your links to work either. But I do remember their main anchor for much of the 80's was Allen Denton. I also remember Topper Shutt being the meteorologist.

Topper was Bull's brother. LOL. No seriously, it's been a long time but I remember a man by the name of David Shirk being the sports guy. Don't remember much else. I was living up in McCreary County Kentucky back in those days and where I lived, I could not get Cable TV and channel 26 was extremely hard to pull in up there in Stearns. I had a 50 ft tower with one of those big parabolic UHF antennas and even with all that it had snow on it. Not as clear as channels 6 or 10.

David Shirck was the sports anchors for channel 26 during the mid to late 70s. He may have been the sports anchor when WTVK first started their local newscast in 1975. I do know that channel 26 use to film a high school football game featuring Knoxville area teams and would replay them on Friday nights at 11:00 PM with David Shirck doing play-by-play. I think he was fired by channel in 1980/81 or so for a DUI while in one of the stations cars. He did become the host of WKGN's Sports Talk Show a little bit after they went all news/talk in the fall of 1981.

I lived and grew up in South Knox Co. and we couldn't get a clear picture without snow on it for channel 26 until we got cable in 1982 or so. Never really got to see any of the ABC shows until WATE became the ABC affliate in Knoxville in 1979.

I remember that incident. The last couple of blocks of Cumberland Avenue in downtown Knoxville are one way... and Shirk was driving the wrong way. He nailed a Knoxville policeman in a marked cruiser-and then fled. When he was caught on the Henley Street bridge, he blew a .24 on the Breathalyzer. That ended his career at WTVK, but he was later hired by WKGN.

I could not get the links to work either, I remember Art Powell being an anchor back in the 70's and Hal Wanzer came over from channel 6. Early 80's had Adele Awakawa coming on board from WRJZ radio to do weather, she has been the lead anchor @ KUSA in Denver for a long time now.
