WTVN on 92.3 and 105.7

I was just listening to WTVN and heard them say they were simulcasting on WCOL, and flipping to the other CC stations they were on 105.7 too because of the storms.

Funny, WNCI (their crown is still curning out automated voicetracked Ryan Seacrest)
God forbid we take the voicetracked crown jewel Ryan seacrest

Despite the fact WNCI stayed with music and VT'ed Ryan Seacrest...

I will give Clear Channel Columbus props for going "live" on 610 WTVN (pre-empting Rush) and taking calls and giving weather updates and then linking up with WCOL-FM, WLZT, and WBWR during the Tornado warning to provide coverage.

I agree completely. This was a welcome reversal from several years ago when there was that big Christmastime ice storm with all the power outages and damage, and all TVN was doing was playing nonstop Christmas music.

They are to be applauded. If we get severe weather in Pittsburgh that strikes later than
afternoon drive, nobody but KDKA is offering any breaking news coverage. And they are not
always doing a particularly good job of it. If you are listening to FM and do not catch the
EAS alert you are SOL.

Somewhat of topic but have any of you noticed WTVN caring local news later into the night? I have heard local news as late as 10:00 PM.
WTVN carried live and local new 24/7 up until about four years ago. These new late evening local news casts seemed to be per-recorded.

Yeah, they gotta be pre-recorded. 610 needs to be live/local till at least ten. I bet if a winter storm hit after 7p, noone would report. Can't get a temperature after that time.

Love WTVN but they need to quit going to sleep at 7pm.

Take me back to the days when Steve Cannon and Don Alexander (i think) with live news till 1am.

What part of "they don't have the money to do it" can't you understand?

Don't get me wrong...I agree with the thrust of what you're saying...the overall success of a newstalk station requires a strong local news presence. Whether that means till 1 am (when the vast majority of the audience is asleep) depends on the situation. It's more important to be on the air live at the times when people need the information the most...than it is to be on the air live every morning at 1 am "just because".

When you're gazillions in debt, you have to cut somewhere...

They can't afford it? Cmon. You mean the idiot milionaires have done this. They can't go without a new bently every Christmas. They can afford it.

the financial folks say that Clear Channel as an entity is not sustainable in just a few more years.

Which financial folks are those? I'm not disputing, I'm really interested in the source. A lot of newspapers claim that over-the-air radio overall is a dying medium; I disagree (talk about the pot calling the kettle...).

Moody's made the claim.

According to the ratings firm, the upgrades reflect Moody's expectation that while the company's capital structure remains unsustainable in the intermediate-term, a full restructuring or bankruptcy filing is no longer imminent.

Are you saying WTVN-AM can afford a full time LIVE/Local news-staff 24/7 and 365 days a year? ??? They got rid of the over night news crew(At least on air) a few years ago.

No, just saying that a debt rating company says that while they are not in immediate financial disaster, in a few years they are on a pretty hefty financial banana peel that will likely bring them down.

On a political note, it is somewhat ironic that a lot of conservative talkers featured by Clear Channel often say you wouldn't run a company like our country is being fidcally run, yet the company that owns or syndicates those shows as well as clears them are so heavily in debt that is unsustainable. Hannity and Levin's home base (citadel) has already been bankrupted.

Of course not a word about that.

Very interesting observation.  Wonder what kind of comeback they would have to it? Likely something blaming Obama instead of over-leverage by the the companies. E.g., that Obama's destruction of the economy and anti-business policies are what made the companies unable to adequately service their debt. (Again, I'm just guessing what the talkers might say, not giving my own opinion.)

True, it's actually worse elsewhere. Like Nashville going to Hannity at 2 and I don't think a drive time follows him.

Correct. WLAC/1510, a 50kW clear-channel signal, only has three hours of live/local programming during the day.

That's right, THREE HOURS.

I know, I drove through there before CHristmas. I was looking for local talk after Rush but there it is, the Hannity show.

I think 600 in Memphis at least goes to local after a couple hours of Hannity for like 4 to 7.
