WTVN Re-Image

i'm not even real impressed with his pipes. he just has a sort of run of the mill sound that almost says boy was i lucky to get that big break back when i was in wapakoneta. alright, it's an okay voice. but not of the quality you use for image liners.

in another 'tvn matter, did they dump the weekend with mike mcconnell? granted they had aired only a badly hacked up version of the show when they did run it. but now they're running rush reruns. i know mcconnel's weekday syndicated show is down the tubes. is the saturday deal gone with it?

I think a lot has to do with context. Brian James and Charlie Van Dyke are, by far, the best imaging voices in radio, IMO. Charlie Van Dyke also has a great TV voice, but I wasn't real impressed with Brian James when he was the Channel 10 announcer. Brian James is great when they allow him to enunciate and get dramatic with his voice, like Ernie Anderson used to. He's only so-so when he's just narrating, IMO. This new WTVN guy is pretty run-of-the-mill, in my opinion.

I'd highly doubt TVN's plan is to invade our turf.

I know it means nothing to them in terms of revenue, but could they be pulling a 93.3 here? WLW already gets a decent rating there, so if they confuse the listener maybe that takes some rating away from you ... not so much to bolster WTVN, but maybe WONE or one of the other stations in Dayton? Kind of like taking a point or two away from Sunny 95 with WLZT? Don't know, but it sounds kind of fishy that they wouldn't want to have a unique sound from an adjacent station with essentially the same format. Or maybe they're just making a play for more listeners in Springfield?

Again, that's highly doubtful. Perhaps they could pull some Clark County listening, but, remember we've got an FM signal in there, too...

They would have to achieve listening levels in more than just Clark County to pull the kind of measurable numbers to do as you suggest.

And, there's no "similarities" between the 2 stations other than some of the same talk shows. TVN is more Columbus-centric, which would be a turnoff to Dayton listeners. We do far more local news coverage these days...when people want to know what's going on in Dayton, they are not going to turn on a Columbus station...Plus, we spend a great deal of time with our branding. I understand your thought. But what you suggest would be more like them taking WONE newstalk...(93-3 was moved, essentially into the Columbus market and is a Columbus station.) They're getting about all they're gonna get for now with WLW....and that's been dropping of late.

I've let the re-imaging sink in for a while and, aside from a slogan change and a new voice it's the same stuff. I thought with the slogan change, they may go a little more edgy with the imaging. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I haven't given it enough time, maybe this is it. Either way, I do like what John Boy and Bruce did with the Voice and the slogan. I would personally like to hear a little more KIRO (Seattle) in their imaging.
