WTVN's Best Buckeye Coverage just got better!

You failed to mention who they are...so I will. They are former Buckeye Quarterback Craig Krenzel and former Buckeye Wide Receiver Dee Miller are joining them for Bucksline, Pre-game and Post-game.

Ha ha, I was trying to make people throw some names out. Any mention if Earle Bruce and Keith Byars are still on board? I know that George Lehner is gone and Matt McCoy is in now, but wondering about the entire team. Expect any more additions?

I heard recently that yes Earle is still there.

Let's be honest here.....shouldn't it really be called "Sorta the Best Buckeye Coverage", cuse, well, we don't broadcast the game or anything.....

You have a point. However, do you listen to the game on the radio? I don't either. I watch them on TV, or I am at the game. I do, however, listen to WTVN's pre game show on my way to the bar or to the game. Unfortunately, I can never pick up 1460 ever. I don't even think to switch over to 97.1. So if needing the game qualifies for best, then WTVN is the worst. But if having unbiased discussions about the team, reaching someone outside of 270, and not interuppting post games for hockey measures best coverage, I'll give it to WTVN.

And now that 1460 gave Speilman 3 hours, I have found myself listening even less to 1460. I liked Patrick alot, but i'm still upset they and 1230 got rid of Jim Rome. Maybe another station could pick up Rome and Patrick. Don't know if it's enough to build a station around, but I miss them both. Listening to Rome on KNR just ain't cutting it for me anymore...

I am exclusively outside the outerbelt and never have one iota of trouble getting 1460. I can listen to them clearly when driving to Dayton 2-3 times a week until I hit the east side of Springfield. When I watch the game on TV I turn down the volume and turn up the radio. Everyone I know does that. As a matter of fact I don't feel I can even judge 610's coverage because I never feel the need to turn off 1460.

Dan Patrick was good when he had Dibble but once he left the show went downhill.

The only time you're gonna have an issue this fall is the night games against Texas and Iowa (thanks ABC/ESPN) but 97.1 more than makes up for the lack of night signal on 1460.

While i agree that Dan Patrick and Rob Dibble were good together, I've gotta say the Spielman and Rickergoofus for 3 hours a day is almost unbearable to listen to. At least at the national level DP had many more interesting guests and resources at his disposal, our 2 local heros are spending 3 hours a day talking about themselves and Spiel's "Man Love" for certain players. An hour a day of that was just about right, 3 hours is way tooooo much.

And possibly UofM. With UofM being a 3:30 kickoff and WBNS and their agreement with the Blue Jackets. The BJ's have a game that night. My guess is as in the past, they cut away from pre game for BJ's game. So the only problems would be Texas, UofM, and Iowa... good thing these aren't big games or anything... lol

Exactly, lifeuw. Once we switch back to standard time, if you're outside Columbus you'll have to switch off 1460 once we hit halftime. Make sure, if you're outside the eastern half of Columbus. A rumor I heard a while back (talking a few years ago) is that some deal with Ohio State might switch the Fan's programming from 1460 to 820. Wouldn't mind that at all. The night signal would reach many, many more people to the north and east of town; its null back toward Dallas would cover those who can't hear 1460 now at night, so no difference there.
Earlier on, life, right on. 1460 has declined steadily since it canned its local morning show and lost Rome to 1230 back in 2001. The station's never been awesome, but it's pretty poor now. Local programming is mediocre at best and ESPN radio isn't exactly wonderful either.

I must be in the minority then having had the opportunity to listen to sports talk radio in Dayton and Cincinnati, 1460 is at least halfway enjoyable when Herbstriet is on and I also enjoy Spielman although Ricordati tends to be a little amateurish (but I see room for improvement). 980 and 1410 in Dayton are painful to listen to. One thing I will never stop saying though is Jeff Rimmer is about the WORST guy they put on the air. The fossils he digs up for guests are so off-topic it's almost a parody of sports talk.

Hey C'bus Dave,

Go back to answering the phones for 1460.......... or washing the station van.......... or whatever it is that you do at the Home of the Buckeyes.

The lack of objectivety in 'BNS' coverage is bad, VERY BAD !!!!!!!

Haha, I love it when people on this board try to fish for something that might stick as an "insult". No I don't work for 1460, ONN, the Dispatch, the Wolfes or OSU. I just happen to be a loyal WBNS listener. Last I checked there isn't anything really wrong with defending a station that you like. We all have our favorites I'm sure and if anyone here couldn't figure out that I am a 1460 apologist, they haven't been reading long enough. I was very upset when they lost Jim Rome but was happy with Dan Patrick and Dibble. Very happy. Am I sorry to see Patrick gone now? No... I think the product has declined recently.

That said, I would totally agree with you about objectivity. I think this could be said of ANY broadcast outlet that wants to maintain their good business relationship with those whom they broadcast. Make no mistake about it, every radio company in town would likely love to get their hands on the broadcast rights to the Buckeyes and the Wolfes certainly aren't going to bite the hand that feeds them.

Look at ESPN with Playmakers. They cancelled that show after the NFL leaned on them because it portrayed the NFL in a bad light. Of course it wasn't ABOUT the NFL but it was so thinly veiled that everyone knew it was. Two or so seasons later the NFL is broadcasting MNF on ESPN. Do you think that would have happened if Playmakers was still on the air? Not a chance.

1460 isn't going to bad mouth anything about the Buckeye sports programs because they aren't going to risk losing the broadcast rights. I happen to be a proud OSU alum so yea, I am a homer when it comes to the Buckeyes. But I also loved it back in the day with Fitzsimmons was on with Herbstreit because he was one of the only 1460 hosts that would actually bring on guests that were affiliated with a team OUTSIDE the state. He was topical and his topics for discussion weren't all about OSU football. I'm sure that's probably what ultimately ran him out of town.

This all being said, I still enjoy the talk on 1460 even if it is all football all the time. They badmouth my Browns on a daily basis but I can't say I disagree with them. They don't have a broadcast contract to protect there.

Hey, CBusDave!
Since you are a big fan of 1460, what do you think about their decision to have their post game hosted by a guy who knows nothing about OSU football? I mean, I heard he was a good D3 and Arena QB, but this is OSU! I just can't believe they couldn't find someone with some tie to OSU to do their post game coverage. I just feel you need to have that OSU tie, if you are going to use a former player. Your thoughts?

Well to be honest with you most of the ex-Buckeyes that I have heard them dig up from past teams that aren't currently in football now have been horrible. I don't think you necessarily need an OSU tie-in to be effective and having someone that knows the game that can coherently break it down is fine by me. I haven't listened to a post game show yet so I can't comment on it but I wouldn't pass judgement on a guy just because he's not a OSU alumni.

I would wager that most of the really insightful commentators on TV broadcasting football are former players or coaches. Is John Madden indicted whenever he calls a game that doesn't happen to be the Raiders? Ok probably a bad example since Madden is an easy target by everyone :) But even still, how 'bout Shannon Sharpe.. oooo another bad example. Boomer Esiason? Not a fan. Now that we get to it former players in general might be a bad choice.

I guess I don't really have a point other than some of the best broadcasters out there have nothing to do with the school they are talking about. It's their job to break down football. A football player logically might be one of the better people to do something like that... or so the thinking probably goes.

It's Matt D'Orazio right? I wouldn't say for sure he doesn't know anything about OSU football. He grew up and played high school football in Central Ohio so what's to say he didn't grow up a fan of the Buckeyes?
