WTWP 1500 AM-HD left on tonight

WTWP 1500 AM-HD left on tonight

Curious, the only other AM-HD that I have heard with digital saddlebags is WTEM AM-HD 980 - iBiquity lists 2 other AM-HDs in D.C., but maybe they have decided to turn HD off. Anyway, I was still able to hear 1520 WKBW Buffalo, NY with a bit of hissing, but it still came in ok. Anything on 1490 and 1510 would, of course, still be clobbered. Haven't noticed any other interference tonight - was this a mistake by WTWP (I called the station, but the engineer wasn't available) ?

Thanks, iBiquity ! :D

Theres a station in my area that is also leaving their IBOC on @ night now :(

I hear a slight hiss on 1520 but hardily anything....

Thanx Ibiquity!! :(:(:(:(:(

HD at night or....Does radio need New Boobs?

Ok. I don't expect to have a particularly civil discussion here. But I will try.
<Perestroika mode="ON">

I am truly glad to hear that KB-15 is still out there. While the powers that be (Along with radio business reasons) have determined that better sound is more important than "Buffalo in DC", I too hate to see "Buffalo in DC" go away. As a guy who had a BIG list of DX catches in my room growing up (in suburban Philly), I get where you're coming from. I would suggest that the 150+ stations on my list will be much shorter for kids in the same locale today. And that is really too bad. OTOH, I was a geek. A guru who could predict hit songs. (The fact that I listened to out of market radio and knew next weeks chart remains unknown to this day) It was fun. But IMHO, not really in the public interest. (Unless getting a 50 year old to dedicate his retirement to the pursuit of good Radio in 2007, is in the public interest). "FCC declares Clouseau in the Public Interest.... " (Not likely)

I know we disagree, but we have traded "Buffalo in DC or Philly" for "better sound". And I guess I'll need to get my fill of Jackson Armstrong on the net. (Which sucks). While we will have better sound, the sad part is... Due to the whole consolidation thing... We might not have better fans. And "THAT" is what reallly sucks in radio.

The good part is... We actually had a "Creation vs Distribution" discussion this week at our weekly station meeting. And amongst the "Deer in the headlights" stares, there was a vague recognition that maybe we need to improve. MAybe my station is not alone. Hope springs eternal. The Proverbial "We" has reinvented radio several times. I think there's at least one more makeover in the old girl. Didn't I see Madonna is going out on tour again?

Maybe radio can get it's boobs done. (I refuse to lose my sense of humor)

That's quite a tradeoff, since only a few tens-of-thousands are listening with HD radios; consumers don't have a problem with analog AM/FM - wow, now we can get AM stereo for news/talk/sports, with a bunch of adjacent-channel interference. No wonder, few AMs have signed onto HD/IBOC, with some having turned it off - AM-HD requires expensive hardware installations, up-front licensing fees, and on-going HD channel percentage fees that will never be recouped.

"That's quite a tradeoff, since only a few tens-of-thousands are listening with HD radios;"

You have to start somewhere. I'll bet there are more HD radio owners in the US than DXers or people who routinely listen to first adjacents.

"consumers don't have a problem with analog AM/FM"

You obviously don't realize what's happening to the broadcast industry, when it comes to advertising and the long term outlook as audience demos age. Where do you get your information from? I don't want to read a link to some blowhard who will give more uninformed opinions. Broadcasters aren't spending millions of dollars for no reason.

In NYC we have 5 AM HD's already. Broadcasting is an expensive business. Ever buy any professional equipment? We're talking about a multi million dollar industry, not some guy setting up a lemonaide stand. Check out the transactions listed on the Radio and records home page;

To Whom It May Concern,

I hope you all realize that HD Radio is DOA, as far as consumers are
concerned. I can hear your digital hash hissing all over WTRI AM 1520 -
good job ! Guess what - no one is listening:

"HD Radio on the Offense"

"But after an investigation of HD Radio units, the stations playing HD,
and the company that owns the technology; and some interviews with the
wonks in DC, it looks like HD Radio is a high-level corporate scam, a
huge carny shill."

http://www.eastbayexpress.com/2007-03-07/music/hd-radio-on-the-offense

"Sirius, XM, and HD: Consumer interest reality check"

"While interest in satellite radio is diminishing, interest in HD shows
no signs of a pulse."

http://www.hear2.com/2007/02/sirius_xm_and_h.html

"U.S. automakers not jumping into HD Radio"

http://www.reuters.com/article/ousiv/idUSN2632750220070427?pageNumber=1

"Bridge Ratings: Sweat the cell phone and don't count on HD"

"In other words, Bridge says interest in HD radio is decreasing even as
your station works hard to increase awareness. What can I possibly add
to this honest and bleak picture that I haven't said before? My
well-intended warnings about HD's "premature death" seem to be rearing
their ugly heads almost two years later."

http://www.hear2.com/2007/04/bridge_ratings_.html#comments

"But is 'availability' of HD radios the problem?"

"And one broadcaster reported to me that he asked an iBiquity rep how
many HD radios had actually been sold as of the most recent accounting.
And this was his answer: 150,000."

Dude,

Communication from the public is to be retained in the public file. You emailing all of this crap all over he place merely puts it in every public files everywhere. Since no one reads them it's not a biggie. IMHO what it DOES do is show the "KOOK" nature of the sender, since they are everywhere. It probably makes it a little more difficult to resolve a legtimate complaint as well.

Actually, I just had a long talk with the lead-engineer and said that their group had a good laugh over my comments - they realize that IBOC is junk technology and will eventually go away. One of the email recipients was the station manager, and according to the engineer, "the suits" did not take-kindly to my comments. The engineer indicated that they have had a number of HD/IBOC interference complaints.

No, you think? Can't be! The FCC has even approved AM IBOC for night time operation, so how could there possibly be any interference problems? The FCC doesn't authorize deliberate interference on the public airwaves. Right?

And speaking of which, can any of the experts on this message board tell me when we can we get treated to full time night time AM IBOC operations for real? The last I heard is that the new rules take effect 30 days after they have been published in the Federal Register. Have they been published there yet? Or are we still in the period for public comment on that FCC report and order?

I've been listening and listening and so far I haven't heard any night time AM HD operation. Maybe it is already being done but my BA Receptors are unable to hear it just yet? If not, then when are the big guns going to start broadcasting IBOC at night?

Inquiring minds want to know! And I also want to know that my beloved AM band will be safe from disappearing into obsolescence at night. HD is, after all, going to save it for me. :)

No rules yet. The rule-making process is still ongoing.

Well, WTWP's IBOC exciter is off, which I just now noticed - is it too early to pat-myself-on-the-back ? :D
