Maybe this is something the Mr Robert Combs can look into. The Sound at WTYB Magic 103.9 has been flat out Terrible for the last few weeks. The Volume is way Lower than everyone else. it sounds Muffled, and off Balance. It needs attention. I know it was/is For Sale but really, it needs attention.

The demolition & reconstruction of Oatland Island appears to have been more costly than it's worth....and no AM on the stick, entirely defeating the whole purpose!

I'm just making logical, educated guesses. Feel free to point out my errors.
I know the 3 original towers had to come down. The great thing about the location was the salt water conductivity that 630 enjoyed from that location. Once it was decided to co-located with 900-1400, what purpose did it serve to rebuild the center stick? Plus, what would the value of that spit of land been back then? Cumulus could have sold that real estate for big money!
Now, that lone tower is a lightning rod with lights burnt out more often than not. That has to get expensive, quick. Maybe adding height to the 900-1400 tower, using the WGSA-CA site across the street, or even the Alltel site off Causton Bluff could have been cheaper.
Not criticizing, just pointing out what (appears) to be a lack of foresight.

Actually the original plan of rebuilding the AM towers was very cost prohibitive so that was scrapped quickly. Once that was out of the way, the co-location planning was started. We actually worked on the plan for a couple of years. The Dickey brothers never planned on selling the Oatland Island property as it is really too valuable to sell.
Having the tower on the island actually helps with the coverage of the now "licensed area" of Bluffton and Hilton Head. Locating the station on another tower would not have helped us any since we could not go above 374' with our antenna without going directional.
The tower was designed to hold several antenna and is actually well grounded. The main problem at that site is the unstable commercial power. Being at the end of the power line run and being on the island causes us more problems than lightning ever will. It would help if we could bury the lines up to the tower, but with the value of the property I nor Cumulus felt that would be beneficial.
