WUEV's Christian Programming on Sundays

Interesting that WUEV devotes just about all of it's Sunday Programming to Christian Music. I haven't seen any other Secular Non Com in America do that. Prehaps it's because of UEV's ties to the Methodist Church?(when I say UEV I'm talking the University itself and not specifically WUEV)

The non-commercial I'm with at school(WSAJ 91.1 FM Grove City, PA) plays secular indie as a main format throughout the week with our entire Sunday night programming dedicated to Christian rock/CHR.

I'm sure it isn't widely common practice, but it is out there.

The University of Indianapolis, licensee of WICR, also has ties to the United Methodist Church. Does WICR have any relgious programming?

WUEV's Christian music programming is the exact same format as a CCM/"Fish" station. See http://wuev.evansville.edu/.

> It is more common than you guys and gals think.. Many of the stations that report to the secondary charts (not R&R) in the Christian Hit Radio (CHR) and Christian Rock (CR) formats are 'blocks' and, or 'shows' that play 3 or more hours per week on stations such as WUEV.... In the case of UE's airing of such a large (larger than in the past five years) part of the Sunday programing to this format, Dr. Jennings (President) has stated from the beginning of his tenure over the Methodist founded instituion, that the major reason for UE's shrinking enrollment in the years prior to his Presidency was the de-emphises of the Spritual roots of the school... With the expection of Methodist Temple, near the campus, the United Methodists of Southern Indiana, Western Kentucky and Southern Illinois are strongly influenced by the 'old school', especially the United Brethern influence that merged with the Medodist movement in the late sixties and early seventies... More importance is placed on the "Evangelical" roots of this University and the influence of a more conservative and Evangelical United Methodist region of the country.... UE is over 150 years old and was founded in the woods overlooking the Ohio River near Mars Hill, Indiana (between Cincy and Louisville) and made its move to Evansville in the early 1900's....Along with Kentucky Wesleyan College and Brescia University in Owensboro, KY (KWC does the same with WKWC-FM/90.3) and Oakland City University (General Baptist) up I-164 in Gibson County (holding WOCU-LP's license), the Church affilated schools (three Protestant and One Catholic) are more conservative in their doctrine and progressive in their delivery of their world view....OH MAKE NOTE! Vincennes University between Evansville and Terre Haute (2 year State school) has a 50,000 watt blowtorch that gives 2 to 3 hours each Sunday night to Dave Ingstrom and his Contemporary Christian Hit radio show (on a secular Hit radio station run by a State school)....

My former sister-in-law attended UE, and, you're right, at that time, if one was looking for the Christian college experience, UE wasn't it!

> When I attended two summers in high school (advanced course credit) and as a general studies student my Freshman year, you would have to look under the largest stone on campus to find out that they were Methodist founded (back then, Shuuuuush! Don't tell ANYONE!)... Their Dean of Students is a fabulous "Church Lady" (I say it in jest) and a good friend to our family... Alot has changed...

It's been that way for as long as I can remember. About 10 years ago, "Solid Rock" on WUEV was pretty much the only outlet for contemporary Christian music in Evansville. I don't think the school's church ties have anything to do with it. At the time, it was more of an opportunity to build WUEV's reputation of providing the area with an outlet for an eclectic mix of music not heard on commercial radio in the Tri-State.

Unfortunately, the expansion of contemporary Christian at WUEV has come at the expense of World Safari, which played a nice selection of reggae, African rhythms, Europop, etc.<P ID="signature">______________

As a Christian Programmer and Consultant, I must disagree in a general term... CCM/Fish formatics key on 25 to 45 demographics with a HOT/AC approach and lean to an audience mix of 70% female to 30% male.... WUEV's Sunday mix is more CHR/Rock based and almost 100% of their music came off of currents and recurrents of the R&R Christian CHR and Rock charts... The Fish would never play half of the songs from the 'UEV playlist, though they would play the bands that do those songs (usually the ballads and A/C moderate tempo releases we call 'mallads'!).... I would say their mix is somewhere between WAY-FM and Radio-U (or even my little 'THEOCRATIC' WYIR.COM)....

"Solid Rock" was an overused outdated title of the token Christian Rock show aired on WUEV (mainly on Sunday afternoons).... And yes, the Buddist Hour is gone (by administration doing) and some eclectic programs I did like...But I assure you as a former student, consultant and knowing of the President's intention to tie the University's roots back to the United Brethern/Methodist world view, that the Sunday programming was expanded....The only reason he doesn't suggest that the station go Christian CHR is two fold: The base format of Jazz programming from 6:am to 7:pm has shown through the sale rummors to be a highly successful and attention getter for the school and that he knows that a MAJOR Christian Radio Group is planning to move into this market within a reasonable timeframe... With South Central's LMA's failure in ad dollars with the Salem standard Christian A/C format at 107.1 (though the numbers were very good with no local programming and questionable commercial content from bonus ads and network ads), Evansville remains a "Bible Belt" metro without a full powered FM doing a form of Contemporary Christian radio... But not for long...
Stay tuned..'

Is K-Love preparing to either LMA or buy a station in the Evansville area?

I attended an Evangelical United Brethren church in Illinois, the denomination that merged with the Methodists to become the United Methodist church. In the late '60s & early '70s a number of young people from my church attended what was then Indiana Central, now the University of Indianapolis, because of its ties with the more conservative EUB denomination. Those days are long gone.

Looking at their website (while that playlist is very outdated) you would NEVER hear a rock song by TFK or Pillar on a Salem "FISH" as Skip said.

WUEV's Christian music on Sundays should be more CHR or Rock based, It's more on target with the college demographics that their signal primarly reaches (coverage wise) and a GOOD alternative to any mainstream CHR or Rock in that area.

My two cents at least..

Agree very much with "X"man Matt! They have to bring in alot of their own material to play as CD service is light to College FM's that only do segmented or shows in the genre... I get most all of my national releases at WYIR from Napster and I-Tunes..We feel that five to ten bucks every two weeks is worth what we want off the national trends... We get alot of independent stuff from bands that play in the Coffee House Dungeon at the "WIRED" Coffee House in Evansville....
