WUIL becoming WKIO?

Rumors are that WUIL will be changing its call letters to WKIO. One wonders if there is a format change also on its way that would be consistent with those C-U heritage calls.

It's no rumor. The call-letter change request is already on file with the FCC. The only rumor is what the format will be.

Well, for longtime residents of C-U, WKIO means either:

- The original K-104, a classic rock station that probably wouldn't be all that different from the current U-Rock 107.9 -- so I would wonder why you'd want to change the call letters.

- Oldies 92.5, after WKIO moved down the dial circa 1990. Oldies/Classic Hits stations are doing quite well these days in other markets, and they might see a niche for that in C-U.

I seem to remember K-104 was a top-40 station in the 80's. The WKIO calls stood for "Keep It On" as "Keep It On K-104" was its positioner.

Hard-to-say what the new format will be. I was under the impression Saga was running True Oldies on an HD multicast/translator combo, and there's little room for another CHR with 94.5 doing adult CHR and 96.1 running mainstream.

You may be right about WKIO in the '80s, Kent. I did not live in C-U then, so I may have misstated what I thought was their format -- but in any case Q96, in particular, does have a top-40 format today.

And yes, Scott Shannon's True Oldies is heard on 97.9, which is also WLRW-HD2.

So it's likely they will take on some other station a little more established, whatever format they choose.

I have some Illini memorabilia that was sponsored by K104.

Was one of their slogans "oldies by day, rock by night"? I have seen this every now and then, and it must have been when KIO was on 92.5.

Glad that the News-Gazette decided to resurrect these old calls. I am looking forward to K108!

I can't say for sure about WKIO's slogans, but I do know that 88.7 WPCD used "Oldies by Day, Rock by Night" for a number of years. I can remember using it in 1990.

To take the KIO thing one step further back, in the early seventies I worked briefly at their predecessor on the "104" frequency, WTWC. Great calls--"Twin Cities"--and a fun format... free-form progressive rock. Bizarre ownership, IIRC...

I believe WKIO did use that slogan. I'm actually thinking it was the predecessor to the top-40 format on 103.9, though I'm not certain about that.

Before switching to oldies full-time, I remember K-104 as being what was commonly called "Rock 40." It was a harder rocking top-40 than what you would've heard on 94.5 with few-to-zero dance/rap songs in the mix. I think that evolved out of the "oldies by day, rock by night" format it had, though I suppose I could have that backward, and it could have been an evolution of rock 40 to oldies instead of the other way around.
