WUMB-FM!

I'd like to comment on WUMB-FM, the erstwhile folk and roots station that Pat Monteith has run since it first came on in 1982. Recently, it's gone from contemporary folk to Adult Album Alternative, pushing many volunteer d.j.s who knew the music out the door and replacing them with "paid" hosts who don't know what the hell they're playing.
Now don't get me wrong. I really love Pat and admire the way she's kept the station going through the years, but the direction that she has taken it really irks me. Anybody care to comment?

I like it, too. There's still plenty of contemporary and classic folk and folk-rock in the format, so it's not like they've abandoned their roots. I was a big fan of WCAS (AM) back in the day (late '70s), and to my ears, 'UMB sounds more like the old 'CAS now than it ever has.

WUMB went on awhile after WMWM had been on at 91.7 and years ago WMWM would be an on-again, off-again station--well, someone in Salem got interested in what WUMB was doing during those times and contacted us complaining about the fact that we'd turn on and suddenly he would be hearing alternative rock, not folk, etc! He claimed to be part of an organization called "91.9 Not
91.7". We explained to him we were lic. by the FCC to serve the North Shore while WUMB was to
serve Boston and the South Shore and we couldn't do anything about it.

These days WMWM is 24/7 thanks to comp., etc. but there are still occasional times when we turn off for maintenance, etc., and WUMB can be heard...but in all honesty unless you're within maybe half a mile of us you can still get WUMB--maybe with splatter from us, but... Oh, and then there was the day when WNEF 91.7 //WUMB turned on with a stick in Amesbury and supposedly a signal
pointed AWAY from Salem. Yes, but you can be in some parts of Beverly and start to lose WMWM
to the WUMB simulcast!

And then there was the manifest destiny move WUMB tried to pull re: WAVM Maynard...ultimately they may have a deal where WUMB is rebroadcast at 91.7 when WAVM is not doing shows...

All live/local WUMB hosts have been paid since the station became a member of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in the late 1980s, about twenty years before their format change two years ago from strictly "Folk Radio" to a folk-and-roots leaning AAA format.

The hosts who have either been let go, or have left, over recent years were not volunteers. They were all paid, and their leavings had little to do with any changes in the station's format or music. They were mainly due to other issues.

Longtimers Dave Palmater and Dick Pleasants are still hanging in there live weekdays in morning and afternoon drive respectively, and even if formatted, they are walking musical encyclopedias and they know what they're playing. But unfortunately, many other fine past hosts are no longer there.

WUMB management indeed knows what it is doing, it is following a the formula prescribed by NPR and CPB to increase marketshare. The weekday program hosts have no programing authority, the same tired AAA songs are repeated over and over. WUMB today sounds like WZLX of old, and no wonder, that's where its music director came from.

I run a Yahoo group serving the folk and roots community. It has a "clunkers" database - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NorthEastFolknRoots/database?method=reportRows&tbl=3 where, since 3/08 (near the beginning of the folk-to-AAA/pop format change) members have been logging the worst songs WUMB's music director mandates be played.

Restricting Dick and Dave's ability to produce their own programs is a shame and waste of their talent. Does anyone believe they would choose to play crap below?

For someone who can't stand the station, you have been paying close attention.

Don't like it, don't listen. Simple.

I too am of the opinion----just change the station if you don't like it.

Those who continue to whine about the format change are wasting their time and energy and the negativism is a real turn-off. It's been months and I continue to read and hear the same drivel from those who complain.

Life goes on!

I happen to think the changes at WUMB are for the best and I absolutely *love* the eclectic nature of the songs they are spinning. The world does not revolve around one person's taste.

I don't think WUMB has EVER sounded better. I haven't heard such great programming since Meg Griffin's Folk Town channel on Sirius Satellite Radio.

But wait! Meg is now on WUMB.

It doesn't get any better than this.

Thanks to Pat M for all she has and continues to do for the WUMB listeners.

I think of it as providing a service, like News Hounds - http://www.newshounds.us/ - "we watch fox news so you don't have to".

The list is a the result of many people's efforts, not just one as falsely implied. Fans of the original format hold hope for the day that the AAA "experiment". like the American League's "designated hitter experiment", will be terminated.

In my initial post I forgot to mention that WUMB's charter remains the same since the switch from folk to AAA.

Serving radio listeners, particularly the folk and roots music audience, through WUMB-FM, the university's public radio station; and promoting WUMB-FM
and its relationship to UMass Boston.

How does Monday-Friday pop/AAA format, representing some 50% of the total broadcast hours, square with the mission statement?

Folk? ya there is a format that is going to draw listeners, all 4 of them

Radio is about getting the maximum amount of people to listen. Now without going into a debate about my tax dollars are funding a station with a *** of under 60K, and so close to WILD a station that is on life support AND daytime only, vs 24/7, I think it is time for WUMB to blow the place up.

I'd rather give the license to touch or hot97, and I'm damn serious about that. It would be best use of the frequency.

What would you do with all the repeaters?

91.9 FM Worcester
91.9 FM Falmouth
1170 AM (days) Orleans
91.7 FM Newburyport
91.7 FM Maynard (owned by Maynard HS)
1430 AM Amherst (owned by Pamal)

And possibly CP's in Marshfield, Gloucester, Milford NH, maybe others.

they NEVER should have gotten the Marshfield CP, the TLC should have but the FCC screwed them over because Ed Perry was on the Board of Directors.

They never should have gotten WPAA's 91.7 when it went dark, WUML should have been allowed to run more power in that direction, since PAA was the royal pain in my side when I was the CE at WJUL, WMFO wasn't as much of a pain, but any change to 91.5 Lowell would have to conform to engineering standards to protect WMFO, not they deserve a license at all, throwing a dead carrier for hours and days on end really pisses me off.

WMFO did that constantly years ago, but WMFO people I've spoken to recently claim that, between having repaired their previously broken transmitter remote controls and having installed a music automation program that they can use when they have no hosts, that shouldn't be happening anymore.

so they should get a free pass for being idiots and or not giving a rats azz about good radio or FCC regs? There are too many groups looking for a frequency to allow crap like that to happen. Someone should have challenged the renewal and grabbed the frequency

im sorry but no station needs that many translators....especially one with WUMB's sleepy yawn format!

amen.

WMFO could be a great station, a great service to the densely populated tufts area, but it's been underused for a decade+ now.

WUMB subscribes to Arbitron (which is a philosophical statement in itself). Here are their numbers, going back to last September.

S-09 O-09 N-09 D-09 Holiday J-10 F-10 M-10 A-10 M-10
Est 0.4 0.3 0.2 0.3 0.3 0.3 0.3 0.3 0.3 0.4
% cume 59300 44300 33500 52300 54600 52900 41300 44600 59100 58800

A May 0.4 est and 58800 %*** places them 37th in the Boston market.

All of the college/non-comm stations are now being included in PPM ratings across the board.

I'm assuming it was all done free of charge (they may have even been incentivized) to get the non-comm's on board.

It's actually interesting to see the non-comm stations numbers public, seeing that some of the college/community types actually beating out commercial stations in big markets. cool if you ask me.

as for WUMB, I like the direction they are going, I think with some more work, over time they can be one of the top NPR music stations in the country (KEXP, KCRW, WXPN, WFUV, etc).

It's actually the area of radio that's still adding new / indie music regularly while all the comm's are afraid to add anything that's not well tested.
