WUMB in Maynard

According to yesterday's Fybush; UMB's 91.7 signal will have the calls of WUMG in Stow' and Maynard HS Radio will still have the calls of WAVM. Will they share the same tramsitter and antenna or each have their own?

According to radio-locator.com (which, I know, isn't always accurate), the coordinates for both stations transmitter sites are identical, which leads me to believe that they're probably the same antenna, at least as of this application.

I had originally thought that the agreement was that WAVM would simply rebroadcast WUMB when Maynard H.S. students aren't doing radio, but instead, it looks like two completely different legal entities will be sharing the frequency (and perhaps transmitter) because WUMG is owned by WUMB (U. Mass. Boston), while WAVM remains owned by Maynard High School.

What I wonder is whether the fact that WUMB will be broadcasting in the area on a legally separate station that they (U. Mass.) own, rather than time-sharing on the Maynard High School station itself, may enable WUMB to eventually pursue finding some grounds or technicality on which to turn around and challenge WAVM's license in an attempt to take them off the air and take over the frequency in the area full-time?

WUMG signed on Tuesday afternoon.

Reception report in my travels yesterday:

WUMG can be heard, very faintly, in spots on the west side of Newton within a few miles of Route 128. The east side of Newton still gets WMWM Salem, also very faintly and spotty, on 91.7.

WUMG was noticeably stronger a few miles north on Route 128 in the north Waltham and Lexington areas, from the Route 20, Totten Pond Rd., Trapelo Rd exits through the Routes 2 and 2A exits. It sounded at least as strong as their main Boston (Quincy) 91.9 transmitter in some spots going through that area.

Continuing a little farther north on 128, it began breaking up badly by the Routes 3/3A Burlington Mall exits, then it made a quick disappearance, and WMWM could be heard weakly cutting in and out again heading toward Woburn.

Unlike their other FM transmitters, WUMG is not (yet) transmitting in HD, and the analog broadcast is in real time, not time-delayed to match an HD delay. Because of this, the program on WUMG is heard a number of seconds before the program on the originating Boston station.

I work in Boxborough (next to COL Stow) and the signal breaks up in many areas. I drove into Stow and found that there are parts of the COL in which the signal is very poor.

So, are they using Stow as their COL because Maynard has some sort of negative connotation? Or do they think that having a different COL from WAVM will cause less confusion in the minds of the listeners?

Of course I realize nobody here is a mind reader, I meant the questions rhetorically.

My guess is that having the COL in a different town may put 'UMB in a stronger position, with WUMG as a legally separate entity, to perhaps eventually find some reason or technicality with which to challenge WAVM's license, and attempt to apply to take over the frequency with WUMG (//WUMB) full time. This is purely speculation on my part, but I'd suggest that the Maynard HS students watch their backs.

A little paranoia is probably a good thing. Too much is not. You know the WUMB folks better than I do, so far be it from me to classify your suggestion as too much paranoia. But some people may not agree that your degree of paranoia is justified.
