You completely misunderstand the dynamic at WVAM. People didn't get fired, they got better jobs. Denny and the Bird hd a habit of contacting bigger market air talent who were out of work and looking. When I arrived (I had earlier work in Akron and Fort Wayne on my resume), I was in the company of other jocks from places like Pittsburgh and Buffalo. The pitch was that they knew we weren't going to stay but, while we were there, we could give the station a killer sound. And we had free access to the production facilities to send out as many airchecks as we liked. They even went so far as to send us an aircheck of the station so that we knew they weren't BSing. I doubt if there was another market of that size, in that era, that had a radio station that sounded that good.
WUOK also lost The Dougger to WVAM. He was a genuine wild man.
