WUPS - "The Station That Delivers"?

I would imagine one larger organization specializing in delivering things, that goes by the name of UPS, would not be too happy about this.

That's all they can do about it...be unhappy...because there's no legal recourse.

FWIW the WUPS transmitter is 160 miles from Detroit -- that's one heck of a rimshot!

WUPS has an impressive 100 kW signal, but not a bit of it reaches metro Detroit. :D

They've used some sort of "Deliver" slogan since taking the WUPS calls in the mid-1980s, and as far as I know, the package service has had no complaints.

It was "we deliver the hits!" They still use it every now and again. I listen to it every time I'm within signal range.

The closest to Detroit I was able to receive this station was Frankenmuth...once. A Detroit rimshotter, this is not.

And this being 2010, you can now listen to it online.

http://www.wups.com/

Though it loses a bit of its charm if you're not listening while driving along U.S. 127 or I-75 headed through Northern Lower Michigan...

I tried listening the other night and the songs skipped too much, but I heard the "deliver the hits" thing a couple times.

I can't see any problem with the slogan. Unless WUPS starts delivering packages, or UPS starts playing music on a radio station. Then there might be some complainin'.

If this station were to use a logo that resembles UPS' logo too much, or if the logo were to feature brown as its primary color, then there might be some copyright infringement issues; otherwise, carry on!

Note that you no longer see the words "United Parcel Service" anywhere on their delivery trucks! I worked as a driver helper for UPS, and came across an older gentleman who noticed me in the brown uniform and said, "so you work for United Parcel Service." I was taken aback, since no one ever refers to them by their full name anymore!

The word "parcel" must not be that common anymore. During training class, we read from training literature. The word "parcel" came up in the reading, and one guy reading it pronounced it as "par-CELL." Interesting mispronunciation, given that "parcel" is (or at least was!) UPS' middle name!

I have heard a lot of packing and shipping people call it "partial" so maybe they went away from it because of the confusion and the "incomplete" aspect of "partial parcel." :D And, of course, the acronymization of everything these days.

When the great blackout of August 2003 occurred, it knocked WNCX 98.5 off the air here in Ohio and as a result I was faintly picking up WUPS on my car radio in Vermilion, OH.

Welcome to 2011, where famous brands like McDonald's, Kentucky Fried Chicken and even JCPenney have taken to scaling their identities down to initials. The lesser, the better, I guess... I suppose Boston Market couldn't get away with this, though... ::)

Not unless they return to "Boston Chicken".

There is a Detroit rimshotter called 98.5 WUPS and they have a slogan, "The Station That Delivers" - as reflected on their Facebook fan page:

I would imagine one larger organization specializing in delivering things, that goes by the name of UPS, would not be too happy about this.

I wonder do 98.7 AMP RADIO (98.7 WDZH FM) IN DETROIT cause interference to 98.5 WUPS FM?

98.7 WDZH FM signal do bleed over the 98.5 FM frequency here in western Wayne County, Michigan.

I never been able to pick up 98.5 WUPS here in Western Wayne County. I've tried many times to pick up 98.5 WUPS. I think 98.7 WDZH FM strong signal is keeping me from being able to receive 98.5 WUPS signal here in Western Wayne County, not far from the downriver area.

I'd be surprised if anyone could pick it up south of Flint.

WUPS is a Mid-Michigan station. When I head north, I tune in. I think they have a decent music mix.
