WUSL Power 99 - Doing Poorly In the PPMs

The numbers are, wow, surprisngly low. Wired 96.5 seems to have them beat both PPMs ratings, and especially in cume. I mean WUSL now has a 2.4 (!!) in the ratings, even below WPHI.

Thoughts? Comments?

The Wendy Williams experience can't possibly be helpful for afternoons. That show is a guaranteed tune-out - it is horrible! I cannot understand how her show ended up in syndication. All I can say is that her syndicator must have one awesome sales team!

If I'm in the mood for hip-hop in the afternoon, I don't even check 98.9 any more. It's 100.3 or, to a lesser extent, 96.5.

I'm pretty sure the show gets big numbers in New York on WBLS.

Yes, agreed. But, it is a waste of airtime in other markets. And, it is a horrible show. Just dreadful.

I've never heard it. But I will say that the target audiences for WBLS and for Power 99 aren't the same. NYC has two hip hop stations. WBLS isn't one of them.

But wendy is the highest rated show on WBLS and she brings the station $$$$

Indeed, as I said. But that doesn't mean she fits the format of a hip hop station.

And her voice, show, style and subject matter are pure New York. Obnoxious to almost anyone else.

I truly wonder just how much $$$ she's bringing to Philly. I can't imagine its much. Has to be a corporate deal that was made outside of the market. This show does poorly in Hartford (on Power's sister station WPHH) too. That station has fallen to last of the full-powered signals in that market. And, it's main competitor (CBS Radio's WZMX) is at or near the top of the ratings.

Much of the drag has to involve afternoons. In each case, listeners tune in for hip hop and urban music on the way home and get boooooring talk. And in each case, they seem to tune out in big numbers. In Hartford, its WZMX that gets the free lunch. Here, I'd imagine that the Beat and Wired pick up the slack. WUSL and WPHH have a lot in common, only WUSL has some heritage. But that's not enough anymore.

Power 99 and WPHH are contractually obligated to air that crap show. We'll just have to wait and see how much pain the folks at Power can take before crying "uncle!"

I've never understood the appeal of her show. I had the opportunity to hear it when I lived in Milwaukee a few years ago when WMCS went to a talk format. They aired the show on tape delay in the evenings and it was TERRIBLE! After I moved to Charlotte, WQNC aired it during afternoon drive. It was dropped approximately 3 months ago. Now afternoon drive is just music, which is much better than listening to her show. It has to be one of worst shows I've ever heard.

Wendy's is one of a kind.
Sort of like Howard was in his early years.
She's not for everyone,i believe she's popular in Philly and of course New York because it's DIFFERENT at least in URBAN RADIO.
It's a diversion from the same 10-15 songs over and over.
HIP HOP'S JOAN RIVERS MEETS LUCILLE BALL.
Strange but true we are working together again at WBLS.
She was a great addition to our show(carter, sanborn and wendy circa 1999)But she is 1000% better as a solo act...always has been.
She like Howard has spawned many imitations AND was recently named Personality of the year by Radio& Records.

The ratings for Power 99 do not imply that she is popular in Philly. New York is the only place I know of where her show actually does well. And, admittedly, it does very well there. But that city has a fairly unique culture that doesn't always translate elsewhere. Look at Imus as another example of that - he was hugely popular in NY and almost nowhere else (except Boston).
