Do you think Power 99 WUSL 98.9 will last much longer?

I think it should be sold to CBS for a KYW Simulcast, or CC shouls air a country or Soft AC format on it.

- [adding a few things]

It has CC's lowest cume and it's ratings are slipping. It's also recently lost a morning show host. It's got a strong signal. Does CC really want/need all the stations it has in Philadelphia? I think a Soft AC format would REALLY do well in Philadelphia. I can't remember if it had been tried yet, either (recently). Was Sunny 104.5 an AC or Soft AC?

Same story for WISX (Although, I really like the station) - Do you think it is safe right now? It's close to Merlin's 106.9, and KYW could completely destroy any hopes of Merlin's 106.9 (unless somehow Merlin actually can convert KYW's listeners to it)

Personally, I'd like to see WUSL, WPPZ and WRNB be used in a better way then they currently are...

Why would CC sell a top 10 market FM to a competitor? If they're not making enough money on a station they will flip formats, not sell it off.

If anyone ever sells it will be radio one, since they have been havning financial issues, and been willing to sell stations over the last few years, but i'm not sure if they were ever willing to sell a Philly station.

They really should, Radio One's frequencies are underperforming (except for WPPZ, but 103.9 is a good Class A in Philadelphia)

I say WRNB is underperforming because WDAS has it beat.
WPHI.. No need to state the obvious :)

What do you base your theory on? 6+ PPMs?
They don't tell the whole story. You have to find out how these stations bill. The owners may be satisfied.
Plus, Radio One seems to generally prefer formats that cater to the African American community.

Where would I find Station Billing?

Power 99 has been holding steady at 800K+ for some time. It is not slipping. And that number is rather impressive since I doubt a lot of its listeners want to carry around a PPM. And as its audience ages, it switches to WDAS-FM.

What is not working?

The fact that WUSL has a (slowly) slipping cume, and CC could be more productive with it. After all, much stranger has happened. The next format swaps i'm expecting are
WPHI-FM (lowest in philly)
WPEN-FM (Being destroyed by WIP)
WSJO-FM (Ratings are pretty bad, but it may stick)
WUSL-FM (Lowest preforming CC station with a lot of competition)

Maybe even WBEN-FM and WISX-FM (i'd be very sad)

WSJO isn't a Philly market station, it's Atlantic-Cape May, and I'm pretty sure its ratings are fine for that particular market (not great but acceptable). Saying SJO is going to be flipped because of miniscule ratings in the Philly book is like saying a York Pa. or Trenton station should flip for the same reason.

It's in the philly market books and rates higher then two of Philly's stations (WPEN-AM and WHAT-AM) - But, I wasn't saying it should flip for that reason. It's ratings in Ocean City - Atlantic aren't that impressive (considering its market size) - I also don't know the billing

Just a quick side note.... WUSL was the first radio station I listened to while learning to drive in 1978. I do not care what the format is , I just hope the letters stay the same!!

"You're on US-1"

I don't think it was the same WUSL. The current Power99 was called WPKS, but had to change because another station used the kiss moniker. That was around 1981.

It was the same station. WUSL, 98.9 was known as US 1 and then it was a country station before what it is now, Power 99. If they attempted to change the call letters it must have not gone through? WPKS is kind of close to WKSZ which was the call letters of Y-100 before QPLY came along.

Exactly. 99 tried to brand itself as "Kiss" just as WKSZ was coming on the air as Kiss 100 (although not with the same kind of music). WKSZ won the battle and 99 became Power instead. 99 applied for the WPKS call and it may even have been granted, but they never used it.

Y100's call letters were WPLY for the majority of it's operations.

there are many reasons Power is not doing as well as it used to.

when i was there..it had something you hear a lot of these days .....
i believe they call it SWAGGER.
POWER used to stand out from the pack...now theyre just another station playing Drake.

but......ALL IS NOT LOST..there is still hope.

Keep Hope Alive..... ;D

As a side note, the reason Power stood out was because their only real competition switched to Urban AC in 1990. It's easy to stand out when you're a fly in a bowl of buttermilk.
