WUWM and WYMS Signals

Signals of both WUWM and WYMS appear to be at lower power than usual, and have been occasional short outages on both stations this week. Are they doing repairs on the Channel 6 tower, or is there some other reason this is happening? Anybody know?

Yes they have been working on CH 6s tower. As of yesterday Afternoon WUWM seemed to be back to normal and I didnt see any workers on the tower. Thursday along the lakefront WUWM was getting clobbered by some Michigan station.

I was wondering about that myself. Because the other day I was able to get a unusual null on their signal and was able to hear WONU Kankakee, Illinois on 89.7.

An 89.7 from Michigan was clobbering WUWM?

The only full-power (50,000 watts) 89.7 in Michigan is a Christian station near Alpena. The rest of them are 1000 watts or less and they're all inland. So it would be a pretty impressive jog if WLNZ (420 watts) from Lansing or WTAC (1000 watts) from Burton made it over there.<P ID="signature">______________

OK I made an assuption as there were a lot of Michigan stations hopping over the lake via Tropospheric ducting. More than likely it was Illinios. My bad.

If it were from Illinois, it's not likely from the Chicago area as most stations in the non-commercial band are under 100 watts. The only stations in the Chicago area more than that are 89.7 WONU Kankakee, IL (35kw); 90.1 WMBI-FM (grandfathered 100kw blowtorch) 90.9 WDBC Glen Ellyn, IL (5kw), 91.5 WBEZ (50kw equivalent), 91.9 WJCH (50kw)(I believe the calls are correct) Joliet, IL. Those are the only stations I can think of that are high powered, and the 89.7 that was getting clobbered could have been by WONU as it's a christian station operated by Oliviet Nazarine University.

It could very well have been WUBS South Bend, IN. I DX stations from Michigan and North Indiana all the time. Yesterday 98.3 WLCS North Muskegon, Muskegon was mixing in pretty well with WJMR. Actually on my radio with my broken antenna WLCS was all I could get on 98.3. WLCS has 1,600 watts WUBS has 1,500

I forgot all about WUBS South Bend. I'm not sure how far 1500 watts goes for them, but I do know their stick is rather short because their stick is on site with the studios. I don't know if the station is moving their tower to an offsite location since there's a CP to increase their power.

Actually TV 6 has been cleaning up the inside of their transmitter building lately. Walls were ripped down and old ventilation ducts disconnected and disposed of. The FM transmitters for WMWK, WYMS & WUWM were also moved from one location to another in the building. WYMS & WUWM were on their backup aux. transmitters during this time.
