wvba frankfort ky

hello, i was glad to find this web site i typed in the name of a radio station that was on the air in the 80,s and located on
the campus of kentucky state unv. in frankfort ky the name of the station was WVBA witch stood for the voice of black america
I was one of the people who worked there i was one of the dj,s and i was also the program director,i was also the first one to be on air when the station came on. i must say that this was the best job i have ever had and the people that were there
were the best it was like a familly and everyone was close to each other. there have been alot of stories about why the station shut down most of them were false. The real reason for the station closing was control and the egos of the people in charge
at the top.

What was the frequency and coverage area?

They operated on a shared time agreement with the Georgetown College station at 89.9. You could receive them in Lexington. The station was on the air in the mid eighties for a year, two years at best.

The owners tried to establish a relationship with Kentucky State University. However that soured when the owners began to promote the relationship prior to any official agreements. I had heard the same thing regarding the demise, ego and big goals in a short time frame that never happened.

At the same time 1440 from Paris (WRPZ Z-1440) attempted an urban format and went dark the same time WVBA shut down. Both stations still showed up in the Lexington Birch ratings even after they signed off the air.

No better argument exists in favor of the new Arbitron PPM ratings than that last line.

Wasn't WRPZ operated by a former Cincinnati engineer named John Crawford?

I know the station well.

I grew up there; as a little kid, my job was erasing tapes.
