WVCB 1410 in Shalotte

Is WVCB in Shalotte currently off-air? I was in Wilmington this weekend and there was no sign of them in the daytime hours, though Durham's WRJD came in remarkably well. WVCB has only 500 watts daytime, but that should still register--at least barely--in Wilmington proper.

I worked at WVCB briefly in 84-85, and I can tell you that if you got their signal in WIlmington, you were doing remarkably well.

I was in Shallotte back in late summer, and tried to pick them up. This, I swear to God, is absolutely no lie. When I turned onto 17 Business from the by-pass at the south end of town, I tried to tune them in. Nothing. I thought that maybe the station had went dark. At the BB7T bank, at the first redlight on the south end of town, I picked them up. After I passed the radio station and got to the north end of town, I LOST their signal when I merged back onto 17 by-pass heading toward Wilmington. So, their station got out that day, roughly, 5 miles.

The owner of the station, J.G. Worrell, also owns a real estate company in Shallotte. The office is also in the radio station. Mr. Worrell has to be hitting 80 or more,a nd the only person I've heard on that station for years has been his daughter. During my last vist, I heard her give a weather forecast that lasted 5 minutes, giving the entire NC state forcast, each region of the state. At the end, she gave the temps, and she said "for our friends in Boone, right now you should be seeing clear skies and your temp is around 84".

Personally, I am a christian. I love southern gospel music, and I do Afternoon Drive on a 50kw southern gospel station in northern Virginia, but the way this station has become, it gives Christian radio a VERY bad name. Just my opinion.

I'm surprised WVCB is still on the air via the AM band, with the possibility of "low-power" FM licenses opening up
soon, they should consider getting a FM translator, but i have a feeling 1410 AM will soon go silent, especially
since many FM Christian stations cover Shallotte from North Myrtle Beach, Lockwood Folly, and Wilmington.
