WVEI 1440

This morning I was listening to 1440. At about 7:10, a couple of minutes into a session where Scott Brown took questions from callers, 1440 went silent. At first I thought that a caller had to be bleeped, but after a couple of minutes I switched to 850 and the interview was in progress. Being a staunch republican, I immediately suspected an ACORN plot, but I then realized that this happens all the time on 1440. Many times they come back late from breaks, two sets of commercials play at the same time, sometimes a block of ads will just play right in the middle of a segment for no apparant reason. I don't know exactly when 1440 came back on, but they were off for at least 30 minutes. Are all of these errors caused by people asleep at the switch or is it a computerized thing?

Are you saying that there is a station in New England that's in far, far worse shape than WALE/Providence?

I don't know for sure, but it looks like automation trouble to me. I doubt that there's a human board operator on duty at WVEI. The idea behind (mostly) simulcast stations like that is to not pay people to operate them live.

automation/850 problem sounds like... the Maine 'EEI network stations always had that problem, my guess is 850 doesn't time out their breaks correctly

Agreed, I listen to the Maine FM WEEI whenever I'm in North Conway and the same thing happens all the time.
