Hello campers,

Just saw the new post of vartv about WVHL - Farmville's "new" lineup. They think because it's live, it's so much better...huh... I beg to differ. The night time guy plays "southern rock" during his shift. One night I heard him play "Renegade" by Styx. Last time I checked, that wasn't southern rock... Maybe it was a freak accident or a stunt, my guess is a little of both... I guess WVHL is on the ropes now since WBNN has hit the books (and done a small ammount of damage) in Charlottesville. WBNN has kicked Farmville to the curb and gone on to bigger and better things....like Charlottesville. Oh well, keep those tapes rolling, because you never know what you might hear comming off of the airwaves on WVHL. If I was them, I'd change format, and please dump the high school sports, no one wants to hear that. If I did, I'd go to the game.

Your thoughts....

I think your usage of the word "lewd" is a bit odd...as Mr. Webster might add:

lewd (lûd)
adj., lewd·er, lewd·est.

Preoccupied with sex and sexual desire; lustful.
Obscene; indecent.

Not once have I heard indecent-ness on WVHL. So, please consult your dictionary before spouting off random words ;)

I can assure you, as I live in Farmville, there is a light on and two cars (station van and private car...DJ's?) parked outside of WVHL. So, WVHL is live until midnight. As for Styx, they do a "collaboration" song with a country band. I have no clue how Styx mixes with country, but I'm sure it does somehow...as they played Depeche Mode because Cash did a remake of "Personal Jesus".

The night guy sounds green, but, hell, it's good to hear a live DJ at night who gives prizes away at 1030 rather than a taped jock at WBNN.

I can assure you too, office people CANNOT pick up WBNN on a cheap reciever in Downtown FarmVegas.

The big difference is that WVHL seems to be promoting "Local-ness" by playing sports and such. While WBNN has "re-focused" toward Charlottesville, WVHL has remained a Farmville station. I think there is very little competition between the two south of Buckingham or Cumberland counties.

Who will make more money? Dunno...and I really don't care. Both will continue to make decent coins for their situation.

WVHL won't be going bye-bye anytime soon, but maybe somebody else...hmm...things might be shaken up in Southside soon.

We shall soon see...

Anyhow, it's late for me...gotta get to bed now

WOW...somebody's ticked...

"JD" does play Southern Rock during the 11pm hour...It's about time somebody got some guts around here and do something different.

> > One night I heard him play

No duh...if you LISTENED, he plays a couple of bizarre songs and relates them to country music...odd, but different

> > Maybe it was a freak accident or a stunt,
> > my guess is a little of both...

Seriously, let's look at that statement. We are going to get rid of the only city-grade country signal in a town so country, it's name is FARMVILLE. Brilliant! Hell, you should run the station yourself!

> > I guess WVHL is on the
> > ropes now since WBNN has hit the books (and done a small ammount

First off, Why would Charlottesville have anything to do with a college town of 7,500 50 miles away? WVHL doesn't even reach there!

WBNN has kicked Farmville to
> > the curb and gone on to bigger and better things....like
> > Charlottesville.

That's nice, meaning that the only two people who are fighting for the huge piece of the country pie are WVHL and WBBC (horrible Farmville signal)

> > Oh well, keep those tapes rolling, because
> > you never know what you might hear comming off of the
> > airwaves on WVHL.

Like, something DIFFERENT and UNUSUAL? How many small-town stations interview country stars on a regular basis? Dang, how many small-town stations have live jocks 18 hours a day?

> > If I was them, I'd change format,

You are a programming genius! NOT! Seriously, go to the Farmville Herald and ask to take the PD's job! I can see it now...

> > and please dump the high school sports, no one wants to hear

Well, many do, otherwise, why is it on small-town stations nation-wide? And doesn't Big Country air high school sports (and Dollar-A-Holler preachers?)

OK, computertech...First...stop bashing WVHL and sleeping in Big Country's bed. It seems like many of your posts are TOTALLY negative towards 92.9, and lovie-dovie towards WBNN.

It's quite sad to see small-town stations going to "the big city". There ARE people in the small-towns too...92.9 realizes this, doesn't try to be big and bad with a rim-shot signal, and produces a decent product, IMO...

I do not know anybody at either WVHL or WBNN, just ticked off that ignorant people who know little about real radio enjoy bashing other stations

I tend to thing computertech is either:

1) A Big Country employee (If so, I know exactly who you are...nice try)
-or-
2) A disgruntled former WVHL employee

So, cough it up, man.

Re: WOW...somebody's ticked...

Wrong on working for WBNN, and no I never worked for VHL either.I live in the area and hear both stations. As far as a decent product from VHL....p-l-e-a-s-e.... And the voice track shot you took, I'd rather hear a really good voice tracked jock than hear a bad live one... I know cut the crap has got to be an employee of VHL. So who's kidding who.. I was just stating my opinion. It's sorta like throwing a rock into a pack of dogs, the one it hits is going to yell..

Just to make it known, the staff at WBNN and WVHL maintain a good professional working relationship. It hasn't always been that way between the two stations. So that should rule out conclusion #1 made above. As far as it being a disgruntled former WVHL employee, I don't know and I really don't want to know.

We all listen to each other and it happened that I heard the Styx song played on WVHL and I'll admit that it was different, but to each his own. Sherry Massaro and I actually talked about it recently.

If somone is trying to cause problems between the stations, please STOP! We certainly have no time for that. I will say that I am proud of the people on board at Big Country 105.3. All good people that work hard and well together.

And regarding the "taped jock on WBNN" comment that was made, like almost all radio stations with today's digital technology, we do voice track. However, all of our on-air people are from the local area, work in-house and are not imported personalities from other stations. At various times we are indeed live, even sometimes at night. We try not to make it obvious whether it is or isn't live. I would love to have live jocks 24/7 but it's not possible with a limited staff.

I personally think that voice tracking gives a station a little more personality and sounds better than letting a station run liners in and out of breaks. Again, this is just my opinion as a programmer and a listener.
Besides, we're playing pre-recorded music, pre-recorded promos, pre-recorded commercials and other pre-recorded programs on the air so what's the big deal about the jock being pre-recorded too?

I'm not criticizing or bashing anyone or any station, but I will have to agree that merely because a station is "live" doesn't necessarily mean that it's better.

All radio stations, like any business, needs to make money to survive and continue broadcasting. Any radio station would be foolish not to target a larger metro area if they can, especially when the local area doesn't have a lot of advertising dollars to support them.

Let's PLEASE pick on other southside stations

> Wrong on working for WBNN, and no I never worked for VHL

Personally, I find that this has gotten a wee bit out of hand...I poked fun at computertech and WBNN...and I hope it's taken with a grain of salt.

WVHL and WBNN are no longer in the "Pepsi vs. Coke" category, IMO. It's more like "Coke vs. Dr. Pepper". There is less overlap of listeners than there was a year ago. You either like Big Country or Kickin' Country. Personally, I find Kickin' Country to be my cup of tea, though BOTH do a good job of servicing their *seperate* communities.

Now, I doubt that neither Sherry nor Greg would hire people who just BLAST away at their competitors on a board. That's wrong and unprofessional. A little poking fun is OK, I would tend to think ;)

And seriously, why do we need to have a cockfight between the two best stations in Southside when there are numerous other ones that sound 100 times worse? Have you noticed FLO's announcers sound like they should be working at a funeral parlor? How about the drunken escapades of WXJK? The stupid student DJs on WMLU? The fact that nobody listens to WPAK?

And if we must poke fun at a country station, why not the worst sounding one in Virginia, WBBC!

Seriously, apologies to all who need them, and take care
______________

Re: Let's PLEASE pick on other southside stations

Aww well, to each his own I guess. Everyone is entittled to thier own opinions. I just thought I'd express mine, I guess I ruffled some feathers so to speak. Either way, the stations are what they are, I just think that WBNN is the best sounding out of all of them. They sound pretty decent in Charlottesville now since that translator was taken down back in June/July sometime. I think it would be best for them to get a translator of their own to have a better Charlottesville presence. Just my thoughts.....

And only a person who made such an egregious error after proclaiming him/herself a lover of all things lyrical and musical would try to cover the blunder with a manure smokescreen. Pretty work.
______________

Re: WVHL - Farmville...Live and unique?

RDXR, I'm just jumping thru all the posts tonite and saw you defending your hometown of Farmville and its station. Good for you man! I loved your reply and can appreciate your defense of the local station.

I miss the mountains. I worked in C-ville at WELK for MountJoy in 71-72 as Steve Shannon and then moved to WINA for a while before moving back to R-mond.

Anyway, as we have shared posts on other strings, I wanted to get to you on your string and give my regards.

You GO Big Willie! Luv the way you come back to him! While guys like you and I go to great lengths to explain ourselves, Bopst just replys with a dumb condecending quote or something that makes no sense to anyone but him.

I guess he wants people to think he's condecending. He's accomplishing that goal.
