I don't think listeners in ANY demo (in any commercially viable numbers) are shelling out money to buy HD radios. It's this century's technological radio convulsion. (See: Stereo AM)
 
Didn't WNAK return to the same format around the first of the year?
 
I don't think WNAK is MOYL, but could be. The format hasn't been heard here for years and it's probably evolved. 89.9HD2 was simulcasting for a while, but you wouldn't know by me and, unless someone gets me HD, you never will.
 
The MOL format is the syndicated "Music of Your Life." They are streaming it on their website and linking to the MOL website (which has a note on it welcoming WVIA as their newest affiliate). Before the stream starts Bill Kelly has a greeting that says "commercial free member supported." Unfortunately, on my mac the stream never started after his greeting, so I couldn't listen to see if there were commercials or not.

The MOL format would work very, very well in this market. However, with the scant number of people rushing out to Best Buy to buy an HD radio, it seems to be a futile attempt to waste this format on an HD channel.
 
Didn't radio learn from the mistakes of TV? All HD does is divide audiences into even smaller groups of hard to reach people.
 
Listening to the stream... there are commercials, but they are commercials for WVIA. So "commercial, commercial free" may be the way to describe it.

Same type of music, but not the actual MOYL format. MOYL was on WEJL/WBAX for years before they switched to ESPN Radio. WNAK (and WCDL) is home-grown programming.
 
WVIA-HD2 had NPR news on the hour in its entirety to cover whatever the network is feeding, which they cannot carry -- an exact match. Other WVIA cut-ins (or cut-outs) cover MOYL net commercials as smoothly as possible. I think they do a good job and listen to it often on my 'puter.

It appears there are some cutaways which aren't smooth enough and also seem to be :30's, but you'll have this. You can't hire a board op to make fine transitions on a background music station and that seems to be the only (small) glitch.

I also listen to Pandora and theRADIO online for the same style of music.

What else is on iBiquity HD radio technology (the proper term I understand)?
 
It appears Music of Your Life has been removed from WVIA-HD2. Right now they are simulcasting HD1 on HD2. New format next week, according to PAD.

WVIA Needed HD2 as much as Lincoln need a hole in the head. The suits are too busy playing computer games, walking around "looking" like they are busy. But don't forget folks. They need YOUR support. Without it, how could they possibly pay some of those salaries like 130 grand or more to BK while the lower half down the latter there make like $7 or 8 something an hour. Keep that support up for more "quality programing. Maybe they can run the audio fom Seseme Street and Barney next... LOL :(
 
BK has had a great gig for many years (decades??). He'll run with it for as long as he can. It's his life - all he has.
 
I was going to put in a plug for MOYL on HD-2 in my Sunday CV music column, but Chris Norton said, "No, not now; I'll let you know when we're going to announce it." Now I know why; it must have been iffy from the start.

Chris did mention they were improving the cutaway cues with MOYL to make the transitions smoother. However, I wonder if that was the real reason. The transitions from the network to local were just a bit annoying, but for background listening it wasn't that awful.

Of course, if nobody but me and a few others were listening, it didn't make sense to pay the network and not receive any income in return. Not that anything will change in regard to listenership with the new format.

Who removed the MOYL URL? It's only their full name.

How about they just air an announcement of what are the suits are doing all day, like playing computer games, talking on the phone and of course...walking around trying to look busy. Kind of like a country club that the public pays for. Why did BK stop running I Love Lucy, Star Trek, The Honeymooners Teh Twilight Zone? Where did THAT money go?

As far as tat IS BK's life and that's all he has. he does have a huge salary to count and don't forget his dog that he brings in for the pledge drives. It gives that "family" feeling to the pitches LOL
 
We tried to accommodate WVIA's non-commercial format the best we could. But, in the end, it was a real challenge for us, a commercial radio network, to deliver them non-commercial programming. It's a bit technical, but basically our system needs additional closures to send WVIA a tone, triggering their local music or song, to cover our commercials. Additionally, they asked us not to have our announcers promote goods and services live, which of course proved to be an insurmountable problem for us. The real issue is that the FCC is over-regulating public radio. If the local station is not profiting from the commercials or live announcements, then how does that violate their non-commercial status. It's an issue for an other day.

We are very saddened to lose WVIA. They're a great group of people and Chris is fantastic. Perhaps when we can figure a way to comply with these regulations, we can deliver Music of Your Life to non-coms again.
