WVII and WFVX expansion and HD facts

At the end of the Bangor Daily News article are some reader comments, one of which
"Good for WVII, I'd watch them over WLBZ. Who wants Portland news?" I had a similar thought when I used to watch WCSH 6 news.Who wants Bangor news? They do well in the ratings so I guess it doesn't bother many people.

Is WVII bulking itself up for sale? I seem to recall that WMTW was did a major expansion of its news (morning and midday newscasts) not long before Hearst bought it from Harron.

The BDN article says that the two stations will provide 'local' HD programming. I'm wondering if this will include the news? It really seems like it. That would leave only WLBZ TV 2 without HD news. This looks like a good move by 7 & 22--could give 5 & 2 a serious run for their money.

At the end of the day it's a matter of whether people will watch and whether there's enough advertising revenue to support the expansion. WVII has been a ratings also-ran throughout its history and has gone through numerous expansions and contractions of its news department since it signed on in the mid-1960s. Management will have to be very patient in assessing its progress as TV news viewing habits tend to be very ingrained (WHDH's meteoric rise to the top in the 1990s notwithstanding.)

Update: local news will not be in HD for a while--it will be next year. However, commercials will be produced in HD to match the HD syndicated shows. Scott Fybush reports this week that they are going to broadcast news in HD, but it will be a while before that happens. But, it's good to see they are moving forward.
