WVKO 1580 amazing

I can't believe WVKO. Half the time they are off the air and when they are on the air the audio usually jumps like a Windows 98 machine is being used. What about a Barix box if they have to do audio like this from Cleveland! Should I continue to go to a certain restraunt and eat raw hamburgers because they can't afford a grill? I think not. Its like doing the Indie 500 on a bike!

We had a pretty good thread going on here regarding this...but apparently it got too heated and was removed...I concur with your thoughts...I would like to hear Steph and Big Ed here, but not with garbled audio...

I turned on their afternoon show yesterday, it was "chattering" so bad, I punched in TVN.

maybe I'll try again in an few months, if ever!

Let's face it, a radio station can only become great, if it sounds good...(or at least something that one can tolerate)

Sadly we're beating a dead horse on this subject.. They will never fix the station because they just don't want to spend the time/money... Btw.. There is a C-Band I want to say at least 4 or 6 ft mesh satellite dish behind the building that SGR, La Mega is located in ... I don't buy the "zoneing" stuff... Saint Gabriel recently mounted a STL dish ontop of the building to get their signal to the AM 820 tower site..

It all comes down to ... the LMA'er of 1580 feels they can get away with choppy internet feeds from WCPT and WWZN and that's all we're ever going to get on WVKO "A voice for the left at the right side of the dial"

I actually have enjoyed the guy from Boston in the afternoon .. If only the tech issues could be resolved.

Was looking for the arrival of the new evening talk shows on WVKO-AM last night. Instead of that,
I was able to hear a Capital University Basketball game. More here:

http://www.capital.edu/womens-basketball-schedule/

Wilmington* (Live Stats Live Audio/Video or listen live on WVKO 1580 AM)

The problem was the audio level I heard was very weak. Even cranking the audio up to full blast,
I could still barely hear the game. Then when the game ended, VKO went to Jazz music and it started blasting away So I had to turn the audio level back to normal level.
Not sure why anyone at the station wasn't paying any attention to the audio levels at the station.

This just strikes me a huge train wreck, as a lot of liberal talk stations end up being. There's a reason conservative talk has had much more staying power. It's thought through a hell of a lot better and it's approached the right way, with good hosts on big stations and a good business plan. Do I agree with everything on the shows that lean right? No (I'm a moderate Republican myself). But throwing this on the air for an election year - and who among us thinks it will last beyond November? - makes it painfully obvious that this is a failure waiting to happen.
Part of me hates to say it because I knew Michael Alwood several years back when we wrote for different newspapers in the area (if this is the same guy and I think it is). If so, great guy. Also enjoyed Gary Richards' sports work. But just saying, the track record of left-leaning talk in this country is bad and not improving much.

There was dead air on WVKO-AM from 9:30PM to 12:00 MN last night when I checked for new shows. No legal TOTH Stations
IDs where aired during this dead air. That must not have any board ops at night and/or any studio automation equipment installed at the station yet.

At least they are giving Ted Williams more voice-over work! Head a few more show promos by Ted Williams on WVKO-AM this
morning.

More on Ted and note article was published when WVKO-AM was all Catholic programming:

Williams says he attended broadcasting school but doesn't elaborate. He once worked filling in on overnight shifts in Columbus at WVKO (1580 AM), a former soul-music station now offering Catholic programming.

Ted went to The American School of Broadcasting when Earl Bailey and Tom Reynolds were heading things up. He worked for Reynolds at WZZT for a couple years though I never see that on his resumes that are pushed around the internet.

I wonder if they will still have their 'Listener Appreciation Party' next month?

It has been renamed the 'Second Annual WVKO Democratic party'.. This morning, the WVKO news director said to go to the WVKO AM website for some "very exciting news":

http://www.wvko1580.com/

Without Stephanie Miller and Bill Press, there is little for me to be existed about, especially with
the $30.00 price tag. :p

Not to mention, a couple of the aforementioned guests aren't even on the air yet due to satellite link issues problems at WVKO-AM. :D

IMO that renaming was not a smart move if they're hoping to get some independents and moderate Republicans (should any still exist) to consider voting for Obama and/or other Democrats.  The labeling could turn them off and scare them away.

Now Big Eddy said he can't make it to 'Second Annual WVKO Democratic party' but Stephanie will be there live via satellite.

Update is here:

http://www.wvko1580.com/

Now, they won't have the three big Dial Global stars at the Second Annual WVKO Democratic party. So, why bother?
This is a disappointment. :'(

The WVKO news director said last Saturday on the air that the Chief Engineer called and said the Satellite dish is now working... Sure enough, programming has been expanded after 6:00 PM... At 6:30 PM today, I heard Stephanie Miller say that she is glad to be back on in Columbus again and today is her first day back on the air in Columbus. She used to be on WTPG 1230 when
it was progressive talk a few years back.

The audio is sounding much better now so maybe they are on a Satellite Dish, as they claim they are now..

Speaking of the news man, he claims he is working thirteen hours plus a day at the station. He must have a lot on his plate
over there because he skipped several local newscasts this morning. It they plan on competing with WTVN, they need more
dependable local news and more local talk shows.

13 hours a day? He musta been the "human-o-mation" system playing the roll of muting the internet bootleg streams and inserting the endless count of Ad Council PSAs locally to cover the Chicago and Boston local breaks.

If he was really spending 13 hours a day there (I don't doubt it) .. he coulda have at least filled those endless Ad Council PSA (You can only endure the "Sassie" PSA so many times before you flip to another station!) Could have filled the breaks with a few more news breaks!

Stephanie's been on for a few weeks... Maybe she (and Dial Global) didn't realize that the folks at WVKO were "bootlegging" her from WCPT's webstream every morning :)

Correction, I should have said the : http://www.therandirhodesshow.com/main.html The Randi Rhodes show... This was
her first night on the air... Thanks for the correction...

Yes, the news guy said he is at the station at least thirteen hours a day!!! He is also at the station on Saturday.
mornings. He must be doing two or three jobs at the station... He may be the PD, SD and ND for the station...
I guess they couldn't get any volunteers to babysit the board for free so he is also babysit the board.

Ok :) That makes more sense.. since Stephanie has been on -- I stand corrected in my comments also :)

Also KUDOS to WVKO for finally getting a web stream up -- and it sounds decent!

I will give credit where credit is due...the sound has become clearer on the station today....but still there are glitches....a long stretch of dead air at 7pm tonight while I was listening heading home...they must not have automated a newscast at the top of the hour....

Yeah coming out of Randi Rhodes at 8:58:50 they had a minute of dead air until the TOH ID played and then went into a news update. Clearly they should had a 1 minute ad or at least a PSA there as filler...

Every time I see the title of this thread it makes me think about 1580's Soul days, when it very well could have used a handle like "1580 amazing WVKO." Of course it didn't, but we did have "Miracle Power 106" as a previous incarnation for WCKX. Miracle, amazing...kind of on the same track.
