WVKO-AM 1580 is changing formats again!

Looks like the switch to Gospel has happened... Faded out of "The Vinyl Vault rebroadcast" at 12:03 am into a Gospel song.

Anybody know who the new operators are? Is this another LMA?

I find Gary's statement regarding the Obama campaign money kinda sad. Elections are
always unpredictable when it comes to radio dollars. I've seen feast and famine over the years.
And why would the Obama campaign advertise on a station where the listeners are already locked up for him? If anybody would advertise, it would be the opposition.

Mark, stop being logical and reasonable...you know that's frowned upon! ;D

If the listeners are "already locked up" for Obama, then the opposition would have been wasting its money advertising on the station, too.
Could someone please let the Vinyl Vault fellow and any other hosts of locally-produced shows on 'VKO know that they're more than welcome to try to get their shows onto WCRS? Seems like a lot of things come and go pretty fast in this market, but we're here to stay. http://wcrsfm.org/volunteer

Yes, but there might be a bit of hope for this one. They seem to be many of the folks who were displaced by Radio One's dropping the 106.3 Gospel format last year. Nice to see them coming back, with a better local signal by comparison. It will be interesting to see what they can do.

If anything this is one of the most logical format changes in Columbus in awhile... The Gospel format on 106.3 had a great niche following .. Just wasn't the bread and butter format Radio One wanted to protect when they had plans of selling 98.9 so they moved Magic to 106.3.

1580 WVKO was gospel in past ownerships so this could be the right key to having a successful format for them.. Best to the folks LMAing it.

Now if I hear that they are going to have some LOCAL people on air, and if I hear the names Mel Griffin, Wayne Dandridge and/or K. C. Jones BABY, then we have a game!

I just read his quote for the first time. I feel sad that Gary Richards is so obtuse that he blames Obama and "past clients" for his failure. Politics aside, Mr. Richards may want to take a hard look at the way in which he conducts business. Perhaps maybe then will he find the answer to why his "past clients" abandoned him.

WVKO-AM has an application on file with the FCC to move it's tower site to the WVSG 820 AM tower site near GROVE CITY and go Daytime only operation.
The present WVKO-AM tower site was built in early 2007. Wonder why they want to move their site so soon?
IT IS PROPOSED TO DIPLEX OPERATION ON THE WVSG TOWER SITE. PLEASE SEE CONSOLIDATED ENGINEERING EXHIBIT FOR FURTHER INFORMATION.

https://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/w...xt=25&appn=101511033&formid=301&fac_num=22341

I don't see WVKO-AM ever going to a Progressive Talk format ever again if this were to happen. I don't see the Catholics allowing Progressive Talk on
WVKO-AM if and when this were to happen. It was said on WVKO-AM that the reasons the Catholics took over WVKO-AM in the first place was
two fold. First, to give the Catholics a much better signal then they had on 1270 WUCO AM back in 2008 and then to silence the Progressive Talk format on WVKO-AM in December of 2008.

Why on earth would you want to give up the night time signal? compared to others in the city its not bad for AM.

The Catholics as you say only wanted 1580 at the time because it was a better signal than they had, they didn't care about the progressive programming. they had the money to sign a new lease and Progressive talk did not, also the election was over, just like this time.

Not saying it's 100% impossible, but I highly doubt there's any truth to that second reason. Sounds far-fetched.

I think many, if not most Roman Catholics are actually rather politically progressive. Even culturally, too. It's just that the new onslaught of radio & TV networks (where are they getting their start-up funds?), and the hard headed Vatican appointees trying their hand at feudal-style politics that are the exception. These media outlets don't reflect the average Catholic's world that I was raised in. Which isn't really any different from anybody elses.

Are you talking about the onslaught of Catholic media? Like EWTN, ect?

From that new proposed site, they can't go nighttime because this channel is a Canadian Clear Channel. Maybe Mark has more on this. There is no guarantee that the FCC will even let them
go daytime only according to a FCC consultant I asked.

I don't think the commission any longer approves a daytime only request. I think that application is dead in the water.

As a practicing Catholic Christian, I believe that those Catholics who are involved in their faith, as in going to Church consistently, tend to be more Conservative then those who are "Catholic" in name only, as in those who might show up to Church on Christmas and Easter and rarely at other times.

If the FCC allows such a tower site move (which is debatable since FCC no longer allows daytime only for new sites) .. I don't really think St. Gabriel cares what is ran on 1580 as long as the tower Lease check clears monthly...

Progressive Talk will likely never be back on 1580 because the folks who LMA'ed it TWICE decided that it was NOT worth the time or their money to do so any more... Unless someone else is willing to step up and cough over more money than what the Gospel folks are currently paying .. Your likely not going to see a change in format (unless they decide that LMA'ing this signal isn't worth it either) ..

My real concern here.. Is are we near the end of 1580 WVKO period? Why would the owners (Bernard) want to give up a tower site they just built in 2007 that allows the station to have 24/7 license? Of course Bernard just recently exited the Youngstown market by selling their FM there to EMF and divesting the AMs they owned up there to some local owner... So could this be part of their plan to exit Columbus at some point... I still think the AM license would be way more valuable as a full timer than day timer..

I think we will never see Progressive Talk on WVKO-AM ever again because of this WVKO-AM CP.
The FCC just granted them a CP to move over to the WVSG 820AM tower site near Grove City and go Daytime only operation:

WVKO OH COLUMBUS USA Daytime

Licensee: BERNARD OHIO LLC

1580 kHz Construction Permit
Domestic Station Class: D Region 2 Station Class (corresponds to W. Hemisphere): B
Coordination Status: Canada: - Mexico: - Region 2: -
File No: BP-20121002ACA Facility ID No.: 22341

I talked to a lot of seasoned professionals and they are amazed that they downgraded a full time AM to a daytimer.

Something that is curious, radio-info shows the CP with the WVSG CP daytime operation AND still with the current WVKO night-time location.

I think that's an error on Radio-Locator's part (their db is not always accurate.. look at the formats of some stations in their db)

From the FCC Page:

WVKO AM 1580 kHz DA2 Daytime B B LIC COLUMBUS OH US BL-20070615ADX 3.2 kW 22341 BERNARD OHIO LLC
WVKO AM 1580 kHz DA2 Nighttime B B LIC COLUMBUS OH US BL-20070615ADX 0.29 kW 22341 BERNARD OHIO LLC

WVKO AM 1580 kHz DAD Daytime D B CP COLUMBUS OH US BP-20121002ACA 5.0 kW 22341 BERNARD OHIO LLC

clearly the CP is for "daytime" only operation because the class is D and not class B like the current licensed 3.2kw/29 watts site.

I tend to agree, but it was an odd error. And again, the FCC is really dead set against daytimers being approved, so this one was an odd cp approval
