WVKO AM ON THE AIR

If Salem does not go after it I could see WCVO going after it for their http://www.promiseradionetwork.com/ or http://www.protalkradio.com/ format's.

Maybe CVCO should focus on fixing their own flagship before they look for acquisitions.  Since Fall WCVO has plummeted from 7th place to 14th (Arbitron 12+ AQH).  They're barely above a 2 share.  Of course, their primary objectives may be be a little different than a secular station's.

P.S. I kinda miss Harry chiming in with a rant that mentions Bill Swad.

Amen Nu_Roo_2! You hit the nail on the head. The focus seems to be accumulating stations and building networks. I hope the perceived lack of focus with 104.9 doesn't cause things to fall apart. It probably is the bread winner for the company.

The reason WCVO might have fallen is the fact their playlist is very narrow. I can't listen for more than a few days before I feel like I'm hearing the same songs at the same time every day. Don't get me wrong...I'm a big fan of Christian music and radio. I just would like to hear more than the same 100-150 songs day in and day out.

Rumors Abound regarding WVKO

The rumor mills' latest gossip is that WVKO has signed a deal to LMA WVKO AM. Reportedly the group who won the successful bid plans to program WVKO AM in a spanish language format. While none of this has been acknowledge officially by Bernard Ohio LLC, an insider close to the situation says it's a done deal.

Can Columbus use another spanish language outlet? The other 2 now on the air (WVKO FM & WXOL 1550) do not cover Columbus' West Side where a large latino population exists. The new Tower site recently built should provide a blockbuster signal to the westside and beyond but it's still AM.

Being on AM isn't a big deal for that format. Until a couple of years ago, the most listened to Mexican station in Denver was KBNO, burying their FM competition and a 50 KW AM competitor. The trend changed and FM has come on strong in more recent books, but AM dominated the format for years, long after nobody else but KOA and KHOW still had decent numbers on AM. A lot of the potential for WVKO depends on what they do with it. If their answer is to plug it into a satellite dish and walk away from it without providing any local program material, forget them having any success.

Here is another thought. Since Bernard also has WVKO-FM and it is Mexican, maybe they will choose the most simple (and by no great coincidence, the CHEAPEST) option and just simulcast.

This solution is simply too logical to ever be adopted by the so called programmers. It makes perfect sense, no need to duplicate studio facilities or staffing. Given WVKO-FM's notoriously crappy signal coverage anything they do will be helpful. It might even be to their advantage to simply move the programming to WVKO-AM and just sell the FM license completely. They would probably come out ahead in the long run.

Well, I got got back from my visit to the WVKO AM-FM studio. The person responsible
for WVKO-AM told that WVKO-AM will indeed be going Spanish any HOUR now... They also have a P.T.A. grant from the FCC allowing them to go Full power as of last Friday.

The same party that presently programs WVKO-FM has the winning bid to program WVKO-AM.
WVKO-AM will NOT simulcast WVKO-FM and will have separate programming... WVKO-FM
is Regional Mexican but WVKO-AM will be Salsa.

So, Now it is official... They didn't want this info out two weeks ago because it wasn't official
then as their winning bid wasn't approved back then. In fact, they refused to discuss that program
scenario two weeks ago during my last visit.

On the drive home today around 5 PM they were indeed playing Salsa sporadically as well as some other tests it sounded like. Not quite ready for prime time but coming in loud and clear on the outerbelt near Dublin

By this "winning bid" situation, do you mean the licensee is essentially leasing the station to the people who are running it?

Yes.
The stations are being LMA'd. This means that the owners of the stations have entered into an agreement with a group or entity to run them under a Limited Management Agreement. Bernard Ohio still retains ownership but the daily operations and programming are up the "renter". They pay an agreed upon monthly sum per station in consideration.

Incidentally, this makes the owners a ton of money without having to hustle for advertising.

I don't know about "a ton of money" in this case. ;) Yes, having worked in the business for a number of years, I am aware of what an LMA is, but they are usually formed between two broadcasting companies. This seems to be an unusual situation since the people running the station through the LMA are not actual broadcasters in the sense that they own stations. I don't know who the group is, but I haven't heard anything about any broadcasting companies from outside the market being involved, so my guess is that it could just be the people who started out buying evening time for Mexican on WVKO in the Saga days when the daytime was mostly Urban/Gospel. I heard at the time this group had a small studio on the west side of town rather than using the actual WVKO studio, but I don't know if that was true.

Will you remember with me for a moment?

Bill Moss- Rallying against all things unjust...

Les Brown- uniting and inspiring individuals to be better than they were...

K.C. Jones "Baby"- Live, local, topical and involved in the lives of the listeners...

Chuck Patterson-articulate, involved, live and local...

Mac McElroy and James Evans-Black reporters gathering and delivering real and pertinent news for the audience...

Kirk Bishop-Blue Monday...it will never be like that again...

The day black media became all about green paper was a sad day. It's not just Columbus, it's everywhere.

Well, it's more than that sad to say. The days of local radio are over. Do you remember what a remote broadcast used to be? When I worked at WBBY, we would broadcast from the Ohio State fair, hey I mean really broadcast, with a radio station set up in a van with records, kart decks, consol and turntables. For the first time for many, people got to watch you work--although nowadays there would be something boring about watching someone click a mouse, accept for me--I'd be using a keyboard and speech!!!!

WVKO was a lot more than mentioned here. It was Up Front and earlier Saturday talk shows, it was hourly news from The National Black network, it was Bert Charles and WVKO getting permission to operate after dark on AM during the trouble in 1968, it was broadcasting high-school basketball, it was breaking local news not just between 8am and 5pm Monday Through Friday. Is anyone aware of how many people love it when Larry Larson mentions their sons and daughters high-school teams? When a media model is Bowwow, and you have stations like BET and 107.5 playing the same singing down to the people 75 songs and videos evry 2 hours, you need not ask what is wrong. It's all about money isn't it?

There is nothing in this market that sounds like Columbus Ohio. You could play any of our stations anywhere and it's that way all over the country. If your going to hear network radio you might as well go satellite or internet!!!
