WVKO format change coming?

With WUCO flipping to a Spanish/Mexican format, a friend of mine in radio has said WVKO is now going to pick up the True Oldies format. Can anyone verify this?

Personally, I would welcome the change, even though I'm a good 50 miles north of the market.
It seems Ohio has the least number of music stations on AM.
 
St. Gabriel wouldn't think of changing the Catholic format. The company saw WVKO as the flagship for its Catholic outreach in central and southern Ohio.

I dont see the WVKO AM changing...but could the FM maybe go oldies?
 
WVKO actually has a huge Spanish/Mexican following. They also had people that made the switch from Power when they were Urban. I do miss those days. That was programmed well. Z103 - THE MOST HIP-HOP & R&B! PERIOD!

Z 103 as hip hop was pretty cool... the biggest problem was the audio quailty sucked.. they ran over 8khz telephone lines for the longest time after the T1 to the transmitter got disconnected.
 
Yeah, I remember that. That's what killed them. They had live mixers and jocks though. The other thing that killed them was running the Clippers games.
 
Oh, and the fact that 103.1 is by far the worst rimshot in a market filled with them? :D

(Give or take 104.3, which of course is paired up with 103.5 again as of tonight...)
 
You make a great point, ljo. A signal like 103.1, if it's gonna aim for the Big City, has to have a format worth sitting through some FM static for.

Other than that, it's basically a Johnstown station, no?

It is. It does alright because of the large population of latinos. I wonder if it's enough to keep the lights on though. I would've tried to grow the Urban format. There's more urban listeners than mexican listeners I would think. Although, good the latino audience has a home for latin music.
 
There are other choices in the Columbus market for that audience.

They may not be a perfect combination of choices, but I don't believe the hole would be big enough to sustain a very poor rimshot signal.

A decent little class A closer to the city? Maybe.
 
Be it urban, Hispanic or any other "city" format, targeting Columbus is a stretch for that signal.

Maybe they should move it to Newark when 101.7 moves west? Heh. :D There might be something to be said for a station serving a populated Columbus ex-urb (Delaware?) that has lost all of its stations to the city...
