WVKO gives new meaning to progressive talk in first week

Don't ever let anyone call me a "liberal"...but, I do have to say this.

If anyone expected this group to be "very" local from the git-go, they don't know the people involved very well.

I suspect it was started at great haste (though, with a lot of thought) on a shoestring and is crawling before it can walk.

Before you can do "local" programming, one has to have the revenue that allows you to pay the host.

I understand what Gary's up against here. People should be patient with this station for now, and give it some time. Oh yeah...I could be critical, too. But, it ain't easy to walk into a market as competitive as Columbus with limited budgets, an AM signal high on the band and obviously, a few technical issues to work out. Been there. Done that. Got the T-shirt to prove it.

And speaking of revenue...Lawson Flag Supply and Buca di Beppo joined the list of advertisers.

Also heard are spots from redpeacecross.com and State Representative Dan Stewart.

The station building is at S. 74 4TH street Columbus Ohio. When you walk by the station it is only two stories tall. There is a lot of tall buildings around. So they are still trying to figure out where to put the dishes. I find this out when I was at the station first holiday party. The group I was involved with was invited.

The reason the audio sounds this way is because the programming is being received via the internet. I believe that Gary Richards pointed this out himself when he mentioned they are not able to receive a signal via satellite because there are buildings in the way. Poor choice of location by the previous owners. This situation will be rectified soon as the dish is being relocated to a more suitable location.

Couldn't they put the Dish and the receiver at the Transmitter site and get a DSL line or something and use a pair of Comrex Access units to send the audio back... I would think it would even be possible with technology some how to send the queues back to the studios also some how to allow proper joins and parts from the Syndicated content.. I remember reading somewhere once about a station doing that as they could not locate a satellite dish at their studios I cant remember where I read it though.

I've noticed, that as of this morning, WVKO has made significant improvements to its audio quality.
So, apparently they are working on it. But, how long will it be before get their satellite dish
installed?? Not to mention local news, sports and the local talent that was announced
early last month to be added in the days and weeks to come. The station has been on
the air for over five weeks now.

It's not unusual for a station to run 30-90 days without "local" personalities or shows.

Remember: this is not a highly capitalized company running the place. It's going to take time for them to make good on all the promises. Yes, there's a time limit for everything, but give 'em some time. If they're improving their audio, it means they're paying attention and they're making progress.

But are they (vko mgt.) listening? I know three people (two of which were interested in advertising info) that have all complained that they can not get a call back after leaving messages and/or sending emails.

Be patient???? Fine, I turned them on this morning when I woke up and heard a very framiliar sound for 1580 a quiet carrier,. So, I went online and just listened to Air America that way. A friend of mine talked about sending them money!!!! I suggested I could use it myself!

A few questions remain as far as I'm concerned. 1, how long will people put up with going off the air? My friend tells me it happens during the day. 2, how long will people put up with the phoneline quality audio? That folks will probably be the most forgiving of. and 3, how long will people put up with the re-build posture when there are so many other alternatives?

I want nothing more then to see WVKO succeed and do well but really, you can't run the Indie 500 in a family car!!!!

I don't disagree with your post at all.

My point about "being patient", was to suggest that not every technical problem can be solved by a small staff on a shoestring budget in the course of a day or two. Of course, if the glitches, dead air, etc. continue ad nauseum, there's no doubt people will begin to turn the station off. And I wouldn't blame them.

And if they're not getting back to prospective advertisers fast enough, shame on them. They're losing business by doing that.

I would only remind the current operators of WVKO: you only get one chance to make a good impression.

I would do a board op for them for free but only for a little while, i would like to be paid eventually. I have a job not in radio but really want to get back in at least part time.

It's not even close to illegal, if people want to volunteer they can. This could be a great foot in the door for someone to try to get a weekend show in exchange for part time work.

I have already offered to put my broadcast experience to work in exchange for more advertising time.

Have you no shame? What is this, some college radio station? Pathetic.

But I guess you're quickly starting to see that wingnut radio isn't such a good financial proposition. Maybe if Clear Channel asked for volunteers it might have been financially viable on 1230 ... lol

Sweetie, trying to get me up ;) is probably not a good idea since you are under a Federal investigation right now.

Which reminds me...A big welcome to my friends at Outlook Weekly, whose promotional deal with WVKO started today and whose
new show on WVKO will be airing Saturdays very soon.

Are they bartering time at the board for free spots? lol If that's the case, here's a suggestion: Don't sit on any toilet seats in that building.

lol-you might catch something in there, but I suppose that's also a risk if there is more than one stall! swab down the board between shifts!

Uh, sweetie...that's already been covered. I market a line of environmentally friendly cleaning products on WVKO.
