WVKO TO AIR CLIPPER GAMES

Just happened to notice today on the Clippers baseball website- www.clippersbaseball.com -that WVKO is going to be their radio partner slated to air all 144 games.  At the risk of angering wilcail--I just wanted to know how the tried and true "progressive talk" fan would take this.  First this means Rachel Maddow's show (6 - 9pm) would take a major hit most spring and summer nights and her stock is rising.  Plus, there are late morning and afternoon games throughout the week...that means Stephanie Miller and Big Eddie Shultz would be pre-empted from time to time.  I am a baseball fan, so this is ok with me, but I just wonder if this is a good move for the "progessive talk" image the station presents.

Checked the schedule also, redsfan.

Of the 10 afternoon games, 6 are scheduled for Sundays.

Steph would be pre-empted during the last half hour on Thursday, May 8.

In addition to May 8, Big Eddie would be pre-empted on April 10, May 29 and July 24--all Thursdays.

A lot less disruption than the Reds games were on 1230, if you ask me.

He wasn't asking you Sean he was asking wilcail :)

I dont mind Sean responding to my posts at all--in fact I admire Sean's commitment to WVKO.  However Sean, you must have only looked at the home schedule--in addition to the dates you specified, the following road games also would pre-empt Steph and Big Ed:

Thursday April 16 (1:05pm at Durham); Wednesday April 23 (10:30am! at Toledo); Wednesday April 30 (11am at Indy); Wednesday May 14 (11am at Rochester); Tuesday May 20 (10:30 am at Toledo); Monday June 2 (10:30 am at Buffalo); Thursday June 26 (1:30 pm at Scranton) and Wednesday July 9 (2pm at Indy).

From what I see there--"Momma" aint going to be happy with all these disruptions in her show; and Big Ed and Randi Rhodes may get a little miffed--and if not them, definitely their fans.  Also, you have to figure in the usual half an hour pre and post game shows eating up their show's content on those particular days.

Still, redsfan, we're talking about eight additional dates. And we're talking about a local team, not a team from Cleveland or Cincinnati.

Even us progressive radio junkies need to break away from the chatter periodically.

We see the big picture. Come for the Clippers, stay for the issues-oriented conversation.

As for the affected hosts:

Steph would love to hang out in the dugout, especially if she were supplied with plenty of box wine. :D

Big Eddie would want to throw the first pitch. Keep in mind he was a sportscaster. :)

And the Clippers are now the farm club for the Senators from Washington, home to Bill Press. Enough said. ;)

Points well taken, Sean. But what about Randi? And furthermore, I would rather see Steph throw out the first pitch at Cooper Stadium. ;D All kidding aside, I hope most progressive talk fans take this news as well as you do.

Talk stations are maybe second only to all sports stations for sports teams to broadcast their games. Here in Los Angeles, The Dodgers will now be on KABC, preempting talk. They were previously on all news KFWB, but the news fans got more upset overall. In any event this is a good revenue and promotions move and should help keep progressive talk on the air in my old home town.

Many talkers air sports, plus sports generate money. Many of the smaller sports outfits will pay for their airtime up front and do their own sales, which means the station gets free money out of the deal. In some cases, local high school boosters or production groups will even buy airtime to run the Friday night football games in the fall.

This isn't anything new to 'VKO, I believe they ran Clippers games and some college sports (Miami of Ohio, maybe?) prior to going dark before the sale.

There are so many ways for live games to generate revenue. And even though the Clippers are minor league ball, they are still our are minor league ball. There should be features all over the place. In game, next day, pre-game , post-game. You name it, there is plenty of entertaining, sellable, earcandy for the listeners. Do a good job this year and next year when the stadium is in place, an you have a GOLD MINE!
