we have another topic going on the DX and Reception board with WVLG being mentioned, and since it seems to be developing into a topic of its own, i thought I'd post my thoughts here.
WVLG from what I remember last year and what I've heard today seems to be moving up the oldies latter along with everybody else. Though to be fair, they are doing it at a slower paste.
Two years ago I have airchecks of them doing a 50's-80's Oldies mix with requests. Its been my opinion that they tend to delve into the 80's more. Best thing is to listen to Bobby Night for 50's-80's Oldies, AC/Oldies hybrid for the daytime, and B/EZ for overnights.
I guess they are doing the Oldies/AC mix so the businesses that do turn on WVLG dont switch to KTK, WMGF or WOGK instead.
I wonder are they even rated? They have a unique demmo and lots of local business and community support, so maybe the rateings mean squot. I know they dont stream and they dont exactly have much of a web presents.
 
I don't live in the area, so my comments are only based on what I have heard when I go up there.....

I do believe the OP is correct, that ratings are a non-factor for WVLG; WVLG comes across as one perpetual commercial for The Villages. And that is not a bad thing.

What's bizarre is that WVLG has no web site, yet there seem to be constant ads or announcements for places *with* Web sites! C'mon WVLG, hop aboard!

I think, and again this is just me, what's wrong w/ WVLG is their choice of music in some dayparts....loud AC IMO just doesn't jell with their easygoing hosts. WVLG to me is a throwback to the days of full service radio....lots of news, community announcements, interviews & such, with music sprinkled in. The Villages being a retirement community for the most part, I think that their target demo deserves better. I do understand the oldies show, though. The overnight show is certainly unique---often you will hear an instrumental version of a famous tune, followed by a vocal of that very tune!! That means, that sometimes, you will predict what'll come on next, and sure enough.....

WVLG is owned and operated by The Villages Media Group. They own not only WVLG, they also own The Villages Daily Sun newspaper and The Villages magazine. And who owns The Villages Media Group? The people who develop The Villages. The station's initial purpose is to inform residents of and promote The Villages. The changes in the music you've heard through the years with some big band music six years ago to what they play now reflects on who is currently living or moving to The Villages. With who you see owns WVLG, it should clear up any mysteries on why they do things differently. And yes I do live in The Villages. Merry Christmas and Happy New to everyone.
 
WVLG is a well run station in a unique area. Were else are there that many people who grew up on AM in such a small area?
