WVLK AM Technical Issues

Some time back, someone mentioned that as a cost-cutting measure, WVLK-AM no longer employed an engineer. For well over a week now, I have noticed at very obvious 60 Hz hum in their audio. Its there all the time. Of course, the cause of this could be any number of things, but it is really surprising no one at 590 seems to care about it. If you live in Central KY, please take a listen.

Tom did such a fantastic job with WVLK while he was there. It's a shame to see it in the shape it's in now.

I was thinking they hired someone. I talked to them about the job, but after seeing the shape the facility was in, quickly turned it down. If they do have a new engineer, he has such a big hole to dig out of a 60c hum on his audio is probably far down on his list of things to do.

And of course, if they had an engineer on staff, this would be fixed in 1 day.

It's pretty stupid that businesses continue to run this way. It would be like a restaurant that every dish they served had a taste of dishwater. And yet they did nothing to clean it up.

Smart.

How many stations do they own in the market? A ton. Enough to justify a good, full time chief and probably an assistant for him.

After about 10 days, the problem seems to have disappeared overnight, last night, that is. I couldn't believe it lasted so long.

I spent a TON of days and nights in the engineering room at Cumulus Lexington. Mr. Devine was a good man and a dang good engineer. One would think that with the money they make with that cluster, they could afford a full time engineer. We have one at our station and we are just outside of Clarksville/Hopkinsville with three stations! No excuse for Cumulus to not have someone there.

How to you expect them to pay for Citadel? If I was Storm Cloud I would have at least a "circuit rider" A day at one town, a day at another, etc. he (she) could at least "put out fires" on the weekly day visit at a cluster.

DJOnAStick...

You are so right about Tom Devine. Years ago, when I was a weekend warrior at the WJMM/WCGW complex, I could not get WCGW to come up at sunrise one Sunday morning via our remote control. Sunday was a big day as it was usually sold out for most of the day. Our, full-time engineer was on vacation. Fortunately, Tom was our "go to" guy in case of problems. I called him at his Harrodsburg home giving him directions to the WCGW transmitter located in a remote cow pasture east of Nicholasville. He was there within an hour never having seen that transmitter. Within minutes, he figured out the problem and had us back on the air. I had to hustle back to the studio (just east of Versailles) to get the programming going.

I am not sure if Cumulus has a full time engineer anymore in the Lexington area. Believe it or not, the "oft overlooked" WJMM/WCGW/WLRT Christian Broadcasting stations DO HAVE one.

Word is that they have interviewed for the position over the past year or so but no takers...largely because the pay is reportedly a joke.

I can believe it.

How much is it?
Don't hold me to this but I thought I heard a figure somewhere in the 30's.

For that you'll get a computer guy who knows where the transmitter sites are located and who to call if they're off the air.

That many stations for 30K?

An IT guy to work the automation, yes. A chief engineer, qualified to fix a transmitter or tune a DA?

Maybe 50 plus generous bene's.

Shoot, i knew a single station chief in Detroit that was getting more than that.... Of course, it was a 50KW with 9 towers....

They still gotta pay the contract engineer to come fix it. Spend a dollar to save a dime.
