WVLK Off the Air?

Nostatic1 said:
Anyone notice WVLK being off the air recently? I can't ever remember 590 being silent.

I do, back in the days of Sunday night transmitter maintenance.....but seriously. Back in the day it would have to be a catastrophic failure for a long term outage. The transmitter facility has had a generator in place since April 1974*, two transmitters, back up studio/transmitter paths and of course a manned transmitter site around a clock. Downtown, 590 was fed throughout the building including the bathroom and Kincaid Towers had emergency power. However, that was then and this is today.

* Even though it wasn't directed affected by the April 3, 1974 tornado outbreak, the majority of Lexington was without power that evening. Since they had a generator, WLAP was the only station on the air delivering information. Urban legend has it that WVLK, possibly Garvis Kincaid himself, was so embarrassed they were off the air that a generator was purchased so WVLK would always be on the air.

They are on the air now. When and how long were they off? And for what reason?

Was it an electrical outage and generator failure, or something else?
