WVLK Translator Being Challenged by WSGS

The voice over guy isn't saying 101.1 anymore on VLK.
I mean, really the only thing they can do at this point is comply. The FCC knows now that there were MANY WSGS listeners in Lexington and with that being true, it's obvious that the WVLK translator cannot stay on 101.1 no matter what power level/antenna height they reduce to. I guess the only thing they could do is apply for another frequency...but they are running out of options in that regard. With all the other ridiculous translators that have come on the air in the last year or so (e.g. 93.3, 93.9, 94.9, 95.7), there is almost no room left in Lexington for any new FM stations. It's very sad indeed.

I think they will be kicked off 101.1 for sure. If they want to move, 92.5 or 94.1 would be a better choice. Both are owned by Cumulus.

I believe 93.9 has a CP pending in Lexington for a LPFM which will be affiliated with the 95.7 LPFM already on-the-air. As a result, 94.1 would probably not work but 92.5 is a possibility. I will be glad when 101.1 is clear again...

Tomorrow is the 30 days I believe. So anyone heard or read any updates?

Also I am hearing a new voiceover guy on 590. Formally of Z-Rock.

I think we saw this delay tactic by Cumulus coming. When this translator was located in Lawreceburg, KY (with much lower power) 25-30 miles west of Lexington, it caused no interference to WSGS in the Lexington area. Just move it back to Lawrenceburg....

Oh, trust me...Cumulus is going to try to drag this thing out as long as they possibly can. As stupid as it sounds, I personally believe that they will try and take legal action against the FCC if they order them to shut the translator down. They are stupid enough to waste the money on all the legal fees and such. You watch.

The bigger picture is WVLK-AM overcoming a night pattern that misses most of the metro. When the station signed on the air it was licensed to Versailles, the "V" in WVLK. The night pattern drops the bulk of the signal to the southwest towards Versailles. The nulls weren't a problem in 1947 but like most post war AM's it became an issue. The Atlanta null goes right down Man O War Blvd and much of what is now population.

When I worked there thirty years ago there were several theories of overcoming the problem. Most costly was moving the tower farm which was cost prohibitive. Another suggestion considered was leasing programming time after seven on WLAP since their nulls weren't as bad and simulcasting. They had a CP to increase power to 1600 watts at night but that expired. A plan that almost happened in the early nineties was leasing or purchasing 101.7 Richmond and simulcasting. However, the Kentucky Central collapse happened so the plan was scrapped. Ironically WVLK and 101.5, formally 101.7 prior to the upgrade, became co-owned and 101.5 provided the simulcast. But for some reason they gave that up for Nash Icon.

Bottom line is something has to be done to the 590 physical plant. The audio quality is horrible and doubtful they are operating at 5kw days. The night nulls have moved, especially the Atlanta null, and last time stopping by the transmitter plant a tree was growing from inside one of the tower fences.

As far as WSGS, they do have a loyal following. Are they still broadcasting mono?

I've been in Colorado for a week and was glad to hear WSGS again on my car radio on US-60 between Frankfort and Lexington this afternoon. I don't know what WVLK and Cumulus were thinking when they put a VERY HIGH profile translator on 101.1 in Lexington. I am glad the FCC actually followed the rules and the will of the people in the area to bring WSGS back...by shutting down the offending translator.

Strongly agree. Though I would be curious about listener reaction at WVLK. Has anyone noticed it's gone?

I can say that I heard someone calling in to 590 complaining that they had changed formats and went to a country/bluegrass music.

I thought that 92.5 would be a better choice if they wanted a translator, but now that's gone for a station in Richmond. 94,1 might work.

Just glad to have WSGS back!
