WVLL-Jemison/Birmingham 98.3 The Valley

Is this a new station, that just came on?

This inquiring mind wants to know.

R.D.P. <><

P.S. What's the status of WVLV 106.3 FM in Maplesville? Is this one now being built out? This inquiring mind wants to know.

I think it came on today. The oldies/classic hits on 97.7 are MIA. 98.3 is playing kind of an adult alternative rock format. I heard everything from John Lennon to Marley to Red Hot Chili Peppers when I tuned in earlier.

I called the Peach @ 6.45 and asked them if they are still on the air. They said they were, but I got nothing but static between 97.3 the Buck and 98.3.

I can't see two commercial stations being licensed to Jemison, especially since they would be seemingly short-spaced (97.7 and 98.3). The Peach identified their COL as Jemison/Alabaster/Pelham/Helena/Calera (insert your own Shelby County city here). The Valley ID'd as WVLL: Jemison-Birmingham. There's nothing on the FCC database about a 98.3 being licensed to Jemison, or even a CP for a station on that frequency in that town.

Yea, I'm not seeing anything at all for 98.3 either for Jemison or the surrounding areas. No translator, no nothing.

98.3 is not a viable allotment anyway because of WTXT in Tuscaloosa, WINL in Linden and WTXO in Ashland.

Methinkst you've got a pirate on your hands.

I wasn't able to find anything on them.

Couldn't even get this station, when I tuned to that spot.

From what I could tell, The Peach is still on.

I can usually get them with a weak to a somewhat moderate sounding signal on most days.

Tonight I could just barely hear them.

And I live at the south fringe of their coverage area.

P.S. The reason I asked about WVLV, is because, I recently went to Maplesville and that station wasn't even on.

I hadn't even thought of the idea that it was a pirate station. If so, it could be using Jemison as its COL as a way to hide where it's really broadcasting from. 98.3 is coming in loud and clear in Helena, drowning out both the Peach and 'TXT.

How strange. I am just a few miles north of Jemison, and I tuned into both 97.7 and 98.3 a few minutes after this thread was posted. The Peach was on as usual at 97.7...only thing I heard on 98.3 was a faint signal from WTXO, the FM in Ashland. There is no WVLL in the FCC database, at least on FM, anyhow. When I saw your post mentioned 98.3, I was thinking you might have transposed the numbers and you meant 89.3 instead. There is a CP for a new station in Jemison on 89.3 (WZLM), but it's yet to come on the air. That has to be a pirate you were hearing...and as you said, probably close by where you are, given how well you were able to receive it.

I just talked with the engineer for the Peach. He said he had just left there tower site and everything was up to full power. They are still on as I was listening to them this afternoon as I was driving through Birmingham on I65. I dont know why you cant pick them up they are loud and clear in Alabaster at 10:46 pm.

I'm not hearing anything from this station on several radios. The signal level for WHPH seems about normal here on the Birmingham Southside. I'll be down in Shelby Co. tomorrow to check.

This station was on this morning. Signal around the Pelham area was poor. They were off when I got off work at around 9:00pm. I have a yagi antenna and a field strength meter all set to go fox hunting.

If this is a pirate, why would they use call letters? Is it common practice for pirates to use call letters?

Just a guess but it's probably to help fool anyone who may stumble across the signal. Radio geeks like us and professionals will see through it with a simple FM Query, of course, but the average Joe won't know any better.

I, too heard the station this morning around 8 am on Hwy 119 in Pelham between 31 and I-65. The signal wasn't all that great, and was mixing in intermittently with WTXO. The signal was stronger, though, once I got onto 65 headed south...and was coming in quite well once I made it to the Tank Farm/Helena exit. I could hear it all the way to the Alabaster exit with varying strength before it completely disappeared around the Shelby county airport exit. Around Alabaster, I heard them mention "98.3, The Valley" followed by, appropriately enough, Bonnie Raitt's "(Let's Give Them) Something to Talk About". I do believe they accomplished their objective. :D

I tried tuning in the station again tonight around 7 pm as I was headed north on 65. There was nothing but WTXO coming in between Alabaster and Pelham. So, "The Valley" cometh and goeth...but who knows for how long. ;)
