WVLT: They break the rules; are they making money?

Crusin' 92.1FM is still Oldies when Oldies stations are dying around the country. They seem to have spots when other Oldies stations say they can't make money doing Oldies and flip to something else. They are mostly local and live when other small and medium market music stations are mostly voice tracked and automated.

Are they in the black - or is WVLT just somebody's hobby?

More or less the second, but they do make money off the brokered programming. Geator money pretty much keeps the station afloat.

As for profitability, if you keep your overhead as low as possible, you can still make a profit serving a nice community, which is what oldies has become, if you do it well.

I think the question could be: 1360...they break the rules (signal/modulation) and they stillmake money...and they're AM! I still don't understand how WPAZ 1370 in Pottstown PA puts up with the interference. If Old Man Herb Scott were alive...

Pab is right.WVLT keeps a very low overhead. But much of their profit comes from WMIZ-AM.Brokered programs do bring in some cash,Geator does pay for his 10 hours per week, but this type of programming is not bringing listeners to substain ratings for better ad rates.Oldies are more appealing than other formats they tried in the past, and they did hit some books in the past, but they can't substain getting the hits on the books.Maybe 2007 might be the year they right the ship.
