WVLT - What Happened ?

With all due respect to the posters, WVLT got the ratings last year in spite of the brokered stuff . The core is 6 am to 5pm as it is with all radio. I think we got off the track a little. My original question was that if the music obviously was getting the ratings, which we all agree was the case, then why change the music ?? I listened again today and it gets more horrible as the days pass. Is it possible that the PD is scared of the jocks? By the way, who is the PD ? I know the GM is T Carl Hemple.

Ratings?
They don't show in Philly.
In Atlantic City they got a high fraction last fall and fell off the radar in the spring.
In Wilmington they got a low fraction in both the fall and spring books.

Ratings are ratings . A high fraction is a start and WVLT had never been close to being that strong before. Granted, they were never going to run KYW out of Philly but they were certainly on the right track and a VERY enjoyable station to listen to. You all have to admit that last year, WVLT was starting to get it's act together. Now it's unlistenable . My question is why would managment change something that was working so well ? If the jocks are bullying the PD, who the H*&$ is the PD ? I want a PD like that !

Never close to being that strong before - or since.
They fell completely off the radar screen in the next book.
Fractional numbers are volitile and prone to various kinds of sampling and data collection errors.
All Access is right to cut off their listings of ratings at 1.0.
Below that is meaningless.
WVLT has nothing that will get an ad agency to buy.
It's a local station in a non-rated market and on that basis it does well.

To the extent WVLT "gets it together," it's luck.
The station is not managed; it sort of happens.
Like a lot of small stations.

LOLOL I love it Fred !!

Geek Boy, WVLT has no PD The Gm acts as PD
They only have a part time MD (WALT LUNDY Two days a week)
and a PRODUCTION DIRECTOR (DAVE FLEETWOOD)

I will give you an example of how WVLT operates.

A former co-worker sent them a demo during a recent period of unemployment.
He has great pipes and major market experience.
They called and hired him on the spot.
They said the PD would show him the board and the format before his first shift.
He showed up.
The PD was not around.
The assistant PD/music director had gone to AC to hit the casinos.
The GM had gone off to some local breakfast meeting.
And the DJ on before his shift was nasty, refused to show him anything or even talk to him.
So he said he was going to go out for a cup of coffee and never went back.

That was my original point. There are so many glaring mistakes, miscues and management problems going on down there, that they fail to see it and accept it as it is.
I hate to say it, because it wasn't much better than the current product, but they were a tad more listenable when they were A/C. But the same problems plagued them then, too. Sure it's a great feeling to own a radio station and work it daily to achieve good results, but at WVLT, someone is playing radio and will not listen to anyone who suggests a change that might better the station or the market.
It's called stubborn.

As you guys post, the picture is getting clearer and clearer for me. Owners and managers will not listen to anyone with proven experiance. Is that about it ? I've see it so many times in my career. What winds up happening 9 out of 10 times is that the jocks go wild and completely ruin the station. I've seen it a couple times. The PD's and the GM's sit and watch until they have to start from scratch. The first sign is advertisers start giving excuses for not advertising. ( I'm in sales :p) . The stop sets get shorter. When will they learn to get off their high horses and FIX MISTAKES !

Yup, that's pretty much it.
A lot of posts on this site blame all the problems of radio on major corporate owners, and wax nostalgic for the days of mostly local ownership.
WVLT (and a few other stations around Philly) offer a vivid reminder of what "mom and pop" management is/was like.
A lot of local owners were wackos on an ego trip - incapable of listening to anybody about anything - who think that because they have money, they must have brains.

I am a little miffed. How does so much inside info circulate amongst the posters?

Radio people are confirmed gossips.
In fact, gossiping and what radio people do for a living have much in common.

Fred, on this one, I agree with you. Some indies were very strange. I worked for one in central PA who was a writer for Walter Cronkite at CBS in NY. He had an Emmy trophy on a bookcase behind him, an open bottle of Yukon Jack with a full rocks glass at 10am, and a loaded Colt revolver in his desk drawer. One day, after I had moved on, I read where he had gotten into an argument with the PD, and shot him in the the shoulder in his office!

Every place I've ever been had at least one wacko station with a wacko owner who provided an endless supply of war stories.
When Lloyd Roach ran WCOJ, it was the wacko station and got all sort of attention on the Philly (even with Lance on the delete button). Now he's gone, and WCOJ has settled down into a good suburban radio operation.
And then there was Allan Loudell and WILM. They've settle down into a small time stumble-bum operation with everybody waiting for Clear Channel to sell or flip and fire.
Maybe WVLT is the new designated wacko station.

Gee....I thought we lost that designation 2 years ago....makes for interesting discussion with 4 pages.

Talk about gossip, I heard that Lou Costello threatens people with violence if things are not his way and Fleetwood blows a temper tantrum if things are not just his way. Them the GM just leaves if things get too rough and waits till things die down. Yes, This should be the new "Wacko Radio" 92.1 WVLT .
