WVLZ 1120 AM off the air?

For the past few months, every time I tune past 1120, they are completely off the air. At first I just dismissed it as temporary, but now I'm thinking otherwise. Translators 97.1 and 101.5 are of course still on. Isn't 1120 legally required to be on the air as well since it technically feeds the translators?

The translators can stay on overnight with the am signal being off, however if the am signal is always off then it's illegal. This is first of this I have heard. Rarely check the Am dial. I hope they aren't doing that and get shut down. The station is great and needs to stick around. Speaking of the translators, I saw a while back on radioinsight that 101.5 has applied to move to 105.1 with 25watts power. I wonder even at 25watts, that it would do better than the 250watt 101.5. WQUT interferes within 5 miles of the tower.

The guy who owns WVLZ also owns an AM in Burlington, VT, is the chief engineer or was for a company in WY/CO and in partnership with another guy is operating KJMP 870/104.5 and KYAP 96.9 in Fort collins, co

WVLZ filed a silent STA. I don't see what loophole allows the 2 translators to stay on the air when the "originating" station is silent. I never quite got the point of the 101.5 translator, even when it was paired with 1340. WQUT absolutely obliterates it.

I noticed yesterday that 1120am is back on air. Another thing I noticed is the on air dj is referring to the station as 97.1 VLZ and the new concert promos are also calling the station 97.1 VLZ. No reference to 101.5. The station imaging is still however mentioning both frequencies.

So to add a little more to this, their facebook page has changed names to 97.1 VLZ. Wondering if they are getting the signal moved to Sharps ridge or cranking up the power from their current location if allowed. That 107.3 signal from that location has amazing coverage.

97.1 is now on Sharps Ridge with 250 watts. Sounds solid in Maryville. How's signal everywhere else? I wouldn't imagine they get much in Loudon county because of the LPFM on 97.1. Also 101.5 has applied to move to 105.1 so I wonder if WKCE will eventually get that?

Interesting. We could actually get WQUT again?

According to their imaging WQUT has payed for VLZ to move to 97.1 because of inference complaints. I don't know how that's possible though. Seems like WQUT wouldn't get much within their legal area because VLZ barely makes it out of Knox without overlap. Maybe they count Sevier County? Either way, the move of VLZ was much needed and if 101.5 moving to 105.1 can get out a better signal I'm all for it. Seems 104.9 and 105.3 might have an issue with that though. Especially 104.9 if 105.1 is also playing oldies.

I've said for quite some time that rimshots would be hardest hit with all the translator construction, and that could affect WTNQ. WIHG has been eliminated from the Knoxville market because of 105.7 translators. 101.5 being a translator in Knoxville was ridiculous from the start. It may work on paper but not in reality with 100,000 watts blasting in from Johnson City. I don't remember WQUT ever getting ratings in Knoxville even when it was in the clear, however.

I miss WIHG. WQUT would occasionally show up in counties east of Knox. Especially when it had something compelling on.

As of this morning 101.5 has moved to 105.1 and is broadcasting WKCE mid century radio. I believe it is broadcasting from the same location at the same power in Sevier County as 97.1 previously broadcasted. It seems to be strongest in the places that the original 97m1 was. At that location, it shouldn't be much of a problem for 104.9 and 105.1. I may be wrong. If anybody knows where it's coming from, let me know. Radio locator doesn't have it updated.

Yeah, I would guess that 105.1 is coming off the Bluff Mountain site. The signal is behaving exactly as 97.1 did along my 22 mile commute from Maryville to Knoxville. It's pretty solid until I'm north of 40, then it gets clobbered by a Gospel station. As for 97.1, the signal is a bit weaker along my route but it's equal to 99.7. I would imagine it's pretty strong closer to town though.

Why not actually check instead of guessing? Yes, 105.1 is coming off bluff mountain. Took me 30 seconds to double check that. Interestingly enough, fccinfo.com shows W268BP as licensed on both 101.5 and 105.1, but its only on 105.1 yet Radio locator will only show 101.5 and no license or CP for 101.5

97.1 has a CP if it hasn't moved already to move from a site SE of Seymour to the WBIR TV tower.

That info was non existent at the time I had asked about the location. 97.1 has been moved for several weeks now. It was originally on Bluff Mtn. I was kind of hoping that 105.1 would continue to rebroadcast VLZ to keep the Sevier County coverage strong but I guess they see WKCE as successful enough to get their FM signal back. The 105.1 rds actually says WVLZ though which I find odd. That hasn't yet been corrected.
