WVLZ/ WKCE changes

Any idea on the changes at WVLZ am. They apparently moved to 1120am and will be rebroadcast on the 97.1 translator. They are still running a simulcast of the oldies WKCE format that moved to 1180am. Who owns it now and any idea what the format might be? Please no more sports or country! I'd love to see something to take on Star or Hot. I know it's a translator but still gets good coverage and another choice would be nice to have.

Also I'd like to point out the 97.5 translator on 107.3 is still rebroadcasting B and 97.5 still has not activated HD. What gives? That things gets out far. Could also be used for something good.

I've talked to someone connected with Oak Ridge FM and WKCE and I'm still confused. Apparently Pirkle's company bought 1120/97.1 (Pirkle may still own that translator) and Mid-Century Radio bought 1180 to move it's geek-and-collector oriented oldies format to, which may or may not have or obtain a translator. No idea what 1120-97.1 will do (I believe the translator has to stay linked with 1120 until next spring.

Not sure about 107.3. It does serve as a fill-in translator for some spots in Gatlinbirg but I'd thought Midwest was going to do another format with it. No clue. Maybe they'll end up selling it to Summit or someone else.

Speaking of WKCE, its geek-and-collector oldies format has been airing on an AM and translator in western Massachusetts, WFAT. But that station has just been purchased by the small chain Saga Communications, so chances are something more mainstream will wind up there shortly.

One of the folks that's part of Mid Century Radio is Karl Lewis Lieber is a former KYGO 98.5 Denver joke who also owned two stations in Pine Bluffs, WY and one in Hettinger, ND. The WY stations were horse traded around at some point were or are owned by Steve silberberg, the guy who just sold WFAT.

Another principal in Mid Century Radio is Aaron Ishmael, who under a different licensee, A&J Radio LLC, owns daytimer WPLB 1070 and translator in Plattsburgh, NY/Burlington, VT. They're calling that one "Mid Century Radio" as a station slogan. Guess who Aaron bought it from? Steve Silberberg.

For about a week and a half, 1120/97.1 has been running the format but after every song, mentioning that WKCE has moved to 1180 AM. I'm guessing whatever change is going to be made will be made soon.

I listen to both WKCE anbd WPLB via the web and generally enjoy both (with the exception of the "live" DJ show). Very few commercials. Lots of music popular in the 50's and 60's with then popular mix of pop and Country. In short, music I grew up with.

Should be called "Geezer-and-Collector" format. :)

WVLZ is now 97.1 "Tender Tennessee Christmas" a.k.a. slow, sleepy Christmas songs. Meanwhile on WKCE I heard an actual jock talking between the oldies yesterday afternoon. I'm not sure if he is live, local, or what.

I should also note I discovered Aaron Ishmael as one of the certifying engineers on an application filed by one of the Steve Silberberg stations.

Yes, I've met the afternoon jock/salesperson on WKCE.

Speaking of Christmas...Knoxville doesn't seem to be much of an "all-Christmas" format market. Some years since I've been here I've heard B97.5 start Christmas music at least on weekends after Thanksgiving and even going all-Christmas for a couple of weeks. The last couple of years I think I've heard regular format music through even Christmas week. Praise 96.3 went all Christmas a couple of years ago...not sure the Southern Gospel fans were pleased. E.W. Scripps and now Summit have not seen fit to flip 93.1 to Christmas for a month, though Westwood One sprinkes them in 2 or 3 times an hour. I find that interesting.

Seems like about 5 years ago or so, B97.5 went all Christmas after Thanksgiving. Then the next year it was just nights and weekends. For the last few years there at least was WIJV Victory 92.7 that went all Christmas after Thanksgiving. Now they aren't even doing that this year. So I guess it's either a "Tender Tennessee Christmas" or none at all.

Oh, before all of that, we used to have WOEZ EZ 88.3 (how I miss that station) go all Christmas too.

Interesting. I remember driving around to look at Christmas lights pretty close to Christmas on a Saturday night and it was the usual Tom Kent show. WOEZ was way before my time here. The 1120 .side of WVLZ had horrible sounding audio today.

Victory has that translator on 94.7 now (goodbye WGSQ Cookeville) technically translating 1240 AM. For a couple of weeks it seemed I was getting WMIK Middlesboro KY more often than Victory in Knoxville.

Tender Tennessee Christmas has been replaced with random music from the 80s, 70s and 60s. I don't know that that's the final format.

I'm hearing plenty of 90's too. Maybe some early 2000's. Sounds like a Jack/ Bob FM type format. Still no imaging. Just call letters every once in a while. Btw 97.1 still hasn't moved to Knoxville.

I would love to hear something younger. Some form of Top 40 would be nice. Rhythmic or Mainstream. We've got plenty of Classic hits/oldies now. No more country, sports, talk, or religious please.
