WVMV is GONE as of 4:30 PM

they just announced that smooth jazz V98.7 is moving to HD2. And to listen this afternoon at 4:30 at a look back at v98.7.

CBS Radio might be stunting with former Smooth Jazz outlet V-98.7, but it looks like the new format is CHR/Pop.
And yes, Rock titles from the Fray and Shinedown have been included along with all the awesome Rhythm crossovers heard on most of the other CBS Radio CHRs.
Check out the temporary website and listen online
http://www.987takeover.com/
http://player.play.it/player/player.html?v=4.4.35&id=155&onestat=wvmv-fm

Personal sidenote: If they really want the market to take notice the website will take a proactive approach with job classifieds. Unemployment in Michigan currently stands at over 17 percent, which more than likely means it's hovering around 20 percent in Detroit. 18-34 year olds are likely scrambling to find jobs (real ones, not Sales ones with companies that are "expanding"). Moreso than winning cash or prizes what the market is likely seeking is any kind of help.

A couple things about the classified idea....

1) Right now, the most important thing is getting the word out that there is a new station. You want NOTHING getting in the way of that.

2) Maybe down the road you can do that. Waaay down the road. If this station is going to be what I think it's going to be, it'll target 18-24s. There are many more things you need to do with the website to grab that demo.

3) The reason there is such a high rate of unemployment is there isn't any jobs to fill! If you're going to spotlight a classified section, you'll just wind up spotlighting a blank page. It's THAT bad. People will notice the money. People will really try to win that money.

To sum up, you need to build an audience before you can service an audience.

This is very sad. I've been a fan of V98.7 for all these years.

I really question whether Detroit needs another Top 40 station - if you consider 95.5, 96.3, and now 106.7. But then again, I guess none of those stations are truly "Top 40". 95.5 is kinda close but throws in quite a bit of rap/hip-hop stuff. 96.3 is just a good Hot AC station, and 106.7 is an AWESOME dance-ish station that has some Top 40 flavor in it.

Smooth jazz is now on 98.7 HD 2, so you and every other metro Detroiter need to be informed that they can still hear Smooth Jazz on 98.7 HD 2.

And Clear channel should continue 106.7 FM The FOX on 106.7 FM HD 2, that the great thing about HD Radio, you can keep the old format alive on the HD 2 Channel of the FM frequency.

Keep telling yourself this a benefit, but only 1% of the audience has HD receivers. More people could probably hear it on their mobile phones.

Didn't Detroit have 2 Top-40 stations in the past? Remember Q95.5 and 93.1 DRQ?

Correct :)
In the 80s 96.3 WHYT (known as Power 96 in the latter half) went up first again 93 DRQ and Z95.5, and later 99.5 The Fox.
I believe WCZY changed to Adult CHR Q-95 sometime in 1989-90. 99.5 The Fox started out as a Rock leaning CHR but it wasn't long before 96.3 WHYT were both youth-friendly CHR/Pop stations playing the big Dance and Rap hits along with the big Hard Rock hits played on MTV.
It is my understanding that the mid to late 80s sound of WHYT (very Rhythmic/Dance friendly for its day) left a huge impression on the market.

Could KTWV Los Angeles be in trouble? Not for now.

First, CBS already flipped Hot Talk KLSX to Top 40. So it's not like they're looking for an LA station to flip to Top 40.

Second, KTWV at last check was the #9 station in terms of revenue in Los Angeles. Only KROQ (Alternative) and KCBS-FM (Jack) bring in more dollars in that market for CBS.

Maybe all Smooth Jazz stations are in long term trouble as the audience keeps aging and no one seems to figure out how to bring new, younger listeners to the format. Maybe if WGPR were smart, they'd stop trying to be Detroit's third Urban AC and take over Smooth Jazz and even the call letters. I'm sure WVMV earned far more money that WGPR did in this, its last year on the air. And Smooth Jazz still has some life in it yet.

In able for KTWV to stay on the air they need to rename themselves as 94.7 The Quiet Storm and drop the name Wave from the Promotions since todays WAVE resemble KBLX in the 1990's

Did Any Recorded The Flip Yesterday At 5pm I Would Love To Hear It

I recorded the launch, plus the tribute show that they played between 4:30 and 5. The problem is it is on a digital recorder and I can't really put it on my computer or anything for people to hear it, Sorry. The launch though was pretty funny and cruel for those who wanted WLLZ to return. They started out by saying "Its time to bring the past into the present, into the now" then there was a whole montage of old WLLZ jingles, after that they said "Welcome back, this is 98-7 Detroit's Wheelz, The rock you grew up with". Then they played "Welcome To The Jungle". So your thinking wow they really brought back LLZ, wrong. About a minute or so into the song it was interupted with audio of the Kanye West/Taylor Swift ordeal at the VMA's with Kanye saying "Beyonce had one of the greatest video's of all time". Then a voice came on saying "Uh ok, then we'll play Beyonce" and then they played "Sweet Dreams".

Now there aregoing under the name of 98-7 Takeover. The real name will be annouced on October 5 at 8am. It will probably end up being 98-7 Amp Radio.

Yep. The format in Detroit is all but dead now.

Dumb question time. Does the format, as it appeared on WVMV, appear on HD2 when the format "moved" to HD2? In other words, do we still hear Zonjic and the other hosts, including the syndication (Ramsey, Mindi) and the Smooth Jazz Network? What is actually heard...just the music?

Well.... while you guys are sleeping with the bed bugs biting, and dreaming about waking up to your new Amp station, feeling joy, wonder, suspense, and excitement as if it were the night before Christmas, just wanted to say good luck. It's always an exciting feeling anytime a new station with a strong potential of some greatness and difference pops up along the lines because the hope that something you like will happen with it is alive. Well, ok... maybe the feeling is not the same for everyone. Those who like top 40 are just happy period. Those who just have a fascination with radio regardless of format just want to experience it. However, those who like dance music, the hope is in the fact that they may be dance friendly and waiting to see which hit music artists they might choose to play, which also gives some idea of what could be expected down the road when it comes to future mix shows and specialty shows.

I'm not sure really how exciting this Amp station will be, but I'll just say the one LA has is sounding pretty good. BUT... that's LA... I'm not too sure what Detroit stations are like yet, but if it's anything like what LA has become, then anything new on the rhythmic/top 40/dance side would sound exciting. Anyway, good luck with the new station. I'm sure many people here will be up on time, alarms set, tuning in religiously, catching and memorizing every single sound and thing that occurs on the new station.

I'll be sure to check back to see how many songs they might play in a row........... and... what will be the first song??

Hmmmmmm....................
